In an on-going effort to find a well-made and affordable witnessing Bible I'm purchasing inexpensive Bibles for review and will read each one through, cover to cover while using it for Bible study during church etc. My criteria for this search is summed up accordingly: I want to feel I'm passing out a good solid book - one I'd want to have handed to me if I was being given one - that hopefully will be fully utilized by the recipient in coming to a saving knowledge of the Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. That is what my review and consequently the star rating will reflect.
The full work of the Holy Spirit can only be done with the full Word of God. So I only pass out the full 66 book canon when witnessing.
Book price as purchased - $0 - $10
Suggested retail - $29.99 (fewer stars at this price even though Nelson offers a lifetime guarantee)
Page opacity - This was an ultraslim so the book, which IS very slim, has very thin pages. Seeing whats on the other side of the page is not so bad as to be distracting.
Page wrinkling - Wrinkles in the gutter, easily wrinkles as paged through, bunches easily when closed. Even so, gentleness, even not-so gentleness, has shown no, none, zero page tearing. Impressive. This bible, with the use any Word of God should receive by any one using it consistently, convicted by the Holy Spirit, will become a very puffy book in time because of these thin pages. I have no problem with that.
Ink - clear in both black and red throughout, sharp. Some red-letter editions have a very faded red ink on all or some pages. This is a red akin to scarlet without and is very readable.
Type - easily readable, good on the eyes. I won't buy anything less than 8 pt and this is 8.5 but more importantly the line and letter spacing make for better than normal readability.
Cover - soft plastic that feels durable and looks OK - the design I picked is nice and the blue is majestic - but the important thing is it has at least a semi-yapp which over time will bend over and lend some protection to the fully silver gilded edges. Plastic is easily maintained with a damp rag.
Binding- lays flat
I originally got this to find a Bible that fit with me wherever I go, i.e. my computer case, glove compartment, back pack, etc and it handles all those things very well and is very readable, searchable, feels nice in my hands or looking at on my desk with other books piled open. It is not so big as to get in the way but it will not fit in my back pocket. All that said, my age and my eyes are saying 11 pt font and that is what I'll be searching for next.
But now I'm looking, praise the Lord, for witnessing Bibles and this is a fine one that says 'your special', ' your important enough to receive a quality version of Gods Word' and, the thing I desire it to convey the most, 'read me'.
As of now this version is at the top of my list to purchase in bulk (small discount for 16 or more currently as of 11/1/14).
