Conservative ReviewAge: 45-54Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5Beware: Commentary problemMarch 26, 2014Conservative ReviewAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 1I recently received this King James Version Study Bible by Barbour. It is a very pretty Bible and I would have been very pleased with the quality. This was meant to be a gift for a student in my Sunday school class. As I leafed through it, I found a real problem. The Simplified Bible Commentary Series has been used and apparently they are not a believer in literal, 6-day creation, as the Bible clearly states. Their comment on the very first verses in the Bible bring the authority of the Bible immediately into question. It states "The initial recipients of this story are the Israelites of Moses' day. Because it is written to the people of God, Genesis is much more of a declaration than a defense. These chapters are not intended to give an account of the creation that would answer all of the scientific problems and phenomena. Rather, an air of mystery permeates these two chapters, and within that mystery is the fact that God created this world and it exists within His control."
They are obviously trying to straddle the fence between believers in Theistic Evolution and others. What a strange way to put it ... as if the Israelites being the first to read it had anything to do with it. Certainly the Bible is for ALL mankind and for ALL times. This put my spiritual antenna up and then when I got to the following sentences, talking about how it was not intended to answer "all the scientific problems and phenomena" ... I knew we had a real problem. Science, of course, will show what God's word clearly says ... any perceived "scientific problems or phenomena" come from evaluating the evidence of God's creation with a Secular World View, not from any actual problems or phenomena. They add insult to injury when they try to give the impression that God's word is some dreamy mystery book that isn't meant to share real facts.
CBD gracefully accepted the Bible back and I'm making another selection. My warning is to watch carefully the Bible commentary that you choose. It is part of what you are reading and it will shape your world view. I believe the Simplified Bible Commentary Series should be avoided.
