4 Stars Out Of 5
This Is A Quality Bible
December 11, 2014
First of all, the quality of the Hardcover KJV Matthew Henry Bible (Thumb-Indexed) is excellent (5 stars!). It is one of those Bibles you look forward to opening and reading :-) --- everything from the text to the font to the outlay of the pages. It is a lovely Bible.
Second of all, and the reason for my 4.5 star rating. I own the complete 6 volume Matthew Henry set and thought it would also be nice to have this Bible as well. This brings me to an important point for those who may already own the 6 volume set. While I appreciate this Bible and am glad to own it, often times I wonder why the editor chose to not include commentary from Matthew Henry that was more fitting (if you had to choose) and even more insightful (again, if you had to choose) than the selected commentary for this fine Bible. It is almost like the editor selected (in quite a number of places) commentary that while good, was not as strong as other portions (pertaining to the given verse(s). Granted this is subjective. However, if you own the entire commentary set of Matthew Henry then you will see what I mean. I understand everything can't be squeezed into one volume. However, the selection in some places (especially in the Old Testament) could have been better. At the end of the day, if you do not own the commentary set and this is your only exposure to the wonderful commentary of Matthew Henry... then do not worry. It is still thought provoking and represents a type of thinking not readily engaged within Christendom. There is more of a sense of the holiness of God and the conviction that what you hold in your hand really is the living Word of God.
