Author Bio

As the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, Tim Keller started his congregation with a few dozen people. It now draws over five thousand weekly attendees who meet in three Manhattan locations. Redeemer has since spawned a movement of churches across America and throughout major world cities. Many pastors model their churches on Redeemer and Tim's thoughtful style of preaching. Dr. Keller lives in New York City with his wife and sons.

A great book The author does a great job in the study of the book of Mark. It will make you question your walk and help you develop into a disciple of God. May 15, 2012

A fresh study of Jesus in the book of Mark. He introduces his subject by speaking of The Dance. Each person of the Trinity glorifies the other. He quotes C.S. Lewis,"In Christianity, God is not a static thing...but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost a drama...a kind of dance." The Trinity is characterized in their essence by mutually self-giving love. God invites us into the dance by glorifying Him, centering our entire life in Him, and finding beauty in Him. Keller later speaks of the Lord's dying words from the cross, "My God, why have you forsaken me?" For our sake, Jesus was temporaily being cut out of the dance. Keller makes the interesting comment that pupils chose Rabbis; rabbis did not choose pupils. Yet the Lord called people to follow Him and in essence was saying,"Knowing me, loving me, resembling me, and serving me must become the supreme passion of your life. Everything else becomes second-such as family and friends." He also speaks of the flaming sword in Gen. 3:24 and that Jesus went under the sword;the veil was parted;the way back into the garden (fellowship with God) was permanently reopened. Keller lso observes that at the last passover meal with Jesus, there is no mention of a lamb because the Lamb of God was at the table. This study brings to light new insights into the ministry of Jesus from the book of Mark which challenged and enriched my life. April 26, 2012

very readable commentary on the gospel of Mark This is an extended meditation on "the premise that Jesus' life, death and resurrection form the central event of cosmic and human history as well as the central organizing principle of our lives." (x) The world and how we fit into it is clearly understood by looking at the story of Jesus. Keller follows through the gospel of Mark in a very readable commentary. He uses examples from literature and life today to illustrate the truths Mark records. Keller gives many insights into the life of Jesus and what they mean for us. For example: From Mark 9:19-29 Keller reminds us that, like the boy's father, we do not have to have perfect righteousness or total belief. "You must admit that you are not righteous, and that you need help. When you can say that, you are approaching God to worship." (121) "The gospel is the ultimate story that shows victory coming out of defeat, strength coming out of weakness, life coming out of death, rescue from abandonment." (230) Keller encourages us that we can have the same story by accepting what Jesus has done for us. This book is for anyone desiring insights into Jesus' life and what it means to us today. Keller does not, in general, delve into the Greek. This is not for the scholar. This is for the person desiring to meditate on the events in the life of Jesus. July 22, 2011
