The life of Jesus Christ is powerfully chronicled in this intelligent, gripping epic. From his birth to his ascension, and his ministry in between, Jesus' life is masterfully portrayed with simplicity, dignity, and reverence. Critics called the Sermon on the Mount "one of the most impressive scenes ever filmed." Narrated by Orson Welles. From the producer of the epic spectaculars El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire and the director of Rebel Without a Cause and 55 Days at Peking comes a vivid retelling of the world's greatest story. While the "Sermon on the Mount" is impressive, there are other scenes which disturbed me in their interpretation, notably the moments before Jesus dies on the Cross. In the Bible, He says to his mother Mary and to John, that they are to care for each other as mother and son. In the movie, Jesus is seen as saying to his mother:"Woman , behold your son." This puts an entirely different interpretation on events leading to His death.

I have a feeling that the directors did not have a Christian understanding of the Scriptures.

I wonder if the producers of this movie actually read the Bible for themselves. They did a great job at keeping the movie historically accurate, but they strayed a lot of times away from what the Bible said. In this movie, Jesus visited John the Baptist in prison. They don't show 12 year old Jesus in the temple, but rather a soldier coming to his family for a census when he was 12. Not only that, but I felt like a lot of the film was focused on Barabbas and Judas Iscariot leading a group of zealots to kill Roman soldiers and to convince Jesus to help them conquer the Romans. Rather, I felt like that took the focus off the REALLY important things: Jesus, His teachings, His miracles, etc. They showed very few miracles, but the rest were talked about by Pontius Pilate and some Roman guards. I wish they would have showed Him walking on water, etc. instead of just hearing it being discussed. Also, the Pharisees, Sadducees, and other religious teachers questioned and debated Jesus, but they hardly interacted with him during the movie. It seemed like when Jesus was arrested, they captured Him for more political reasons rather than arresting Him for claiming to be God's Son. Not only that, but I felt the acting was weak. Particularly Mary. She showed absolutely no emotion when Jesus was being crucified, and I just found it unrealistic. The actor who played Jesus did ok, but I'm more partial to the portrayals done by Jim Caviezel and Bruce Marchiano. There were a handful of scenes where Jesus was portrayed as cold and aloof, not really caring about people's problems. Caviezel and Marchiano portrayed a more realistic portrayal of Jesus for me. And not only that, but I felt that a lot of the secondary characters (Peter, Mary Magdalene, etc.)were flat and not really well-rounded. Watch the movie if you like, however I prefer the movies "Matthew" and "Jesus of Nazareth", since both are more Biblically accurate and have much better acting.

This is one of the most Biblically accurate movies I have ever seen! See it, like me, and write your own review!
