Though many valid flaws in the major church organizations were sited, all were blamed on "modernity" and the solution found in "postmodernity." I found a number of inspirational stories in the book, but only a strong Christian should read this as it is spiritually misleading and almost totally segregates God from the church and church development. It should only be read as an example of how people can be mislead by their own thoughts when abandoning the word of God.

A 0.5 rating isn't low enough. This book is an extreme disappointment. McLaren did not consult the scriptures before writing this book. For the serious Christian do not read this book. McLaren's wishy washy theology is apparent and will lead people away from the truth of God's Word.

Brian McLaren has a good heart to help people. However the purpose of living for Jesus is not to fix everyone in this world and not preach the Gospel and teach people solid theology and give them a solid view of Christ and Gods plan to redeem his people. Patting people on the back on the way to Hell and only worrying about Earthly things is in no way being loving . Just remember what James said our life is but a vapor. We as Christians need to focus on Gods Glory and letting God use us to get people soundly saved and teaching the sound doctrine and theology just as Paul wrote Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:16
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. This books takes away and tries to destroy the importance of these things!!!! Which are imperative to have a solid faith in Christ Jesus!

The whole series opened my heart and mind to some new ways of thinking about Christ. A needed read for those wanting to follow Christ instead of the church.

This book offers a bridge for Christians of all denominations - catholic included, to use to walk into the 21st century. It answered my years-long question - yes, go and tell the Good News, but what IS the Good News? It had to be more than Christ's death as our eternal redemption. Raised a Catholic, full-immersion baptism at 38, this view on Christianity helps me piece together what I love in the evangelical church with what I miss from the Catholic. Read it, take your time, ponder on it and then ACT.
