This movie does not follow the true text of the book, Sign of the Beaver, but it does show a great deal of life in the wilderness during the time period. My students enjoy seeing the movie and comparing it to the original text.

I would not call this an "excellent" or "nice" family movie as some have, but there *are* far worse out there. As someone said, there is the cleavage issue. However this is seen in every piece of junk mail or supermarket. Perhaps more importantly for Christians would be the part where a native Indian boy teaches the white European boy mystical rites. (The Bible directs us to avoid witchcraft.)A father leaves his son to hold their claim, whilst he returns to collect the rest of the family. He doesn't return on time and the son must hold his ground through the harsh winter. He learns how to deal with thieves, claim jumpers, fend for himself, make friends, etc. So basically a boy-grows-up &/or becomes-a-man type adventure story. Our boys watch this, but I have them FFWD the mysticism bits with the remote.

This is an excellent family film that shows devotion and courage. Sadly, the Lord's name is taken in vain when the family is reunited.

It is a good movie but the book is so much better. If you read the book first you will be somewhat disappointed with the movie. I recommend the book!
