The Soul. We sing about it (it is well, with my_). We talk about it (Salvation of our soul). We eat food and listen to music about it. But one wonders if we really understand the importance of the soul and how everything in life of value revolves around soul keeping.
John Ortberg writes about the soul with many learnings from his friend and mentor Dallas Willard. He takes us on a journey from understanding what the soul is not, to understanding what the soul is. He then shows what damages the soul and what helps nourish the soul. Some of the chapters on what the soul needs include: the soul needs blessing, freedom, to be with God, a future, a centre, gratitude and satisfaction. Towards the end of the book, it has what I believe is its best chapter and worth the price of the book: The Dark Night of the Soul.
This is a deep book. It would lose its value by being read quickly. It is highly recommended by those who want to better understand and care for their soul. While written with easy to understand terms, it is not an easy read if one wants to care for their soul. It uses Scripture accurately and help open up understanding on the soul.
What Dallas was to John, John is to me and many of his readers. If you want to grow deep and care for your soul, I recommend this book.
