Publisher's Description

The soul is NOT "a theological and abstract subject."

The soul is the coolest, eeriest, most mysterious, evocative, crucial, sacred, eternal, life-directing, fragile, indestructible, controversial, expensive dimension of your existence.

Jesus said it’s worth more than the world.

You'd be an idiot not to prize it above all else.

Shouldn't you get pretty clear on exactly what it is?

Shouldn't you know what it runs on?

Wouldn't it be worth knowing how to care for it?

Two things are for sure. One is: you have a soul. The other is: if you don't look after this one you won’t be issued a replacement.

Bestselling author John Ortberg writes another classic that will help readers discover their soul and take their relationship with God to the next level.

This man has produced some wonderful books. and I believe this one is among his best. As a highly educated man of faith, his perspectives for the Christian, who is serious about joyfully living the life for which he/she is here on earth, are invaluable. Full of references to Scripture, the truths found in this book are not only presented in a highly readable and enjoyable fashion, but most helpful in understanding and getting the most out of one's existence.

This book came at a right time for me as restlessness stirred in my soul that I just could not pinpoint. That said, this is a bit of a heavy read if you really want to take something out of it. I found it best (as I read it twice) to approach it like a personal Bible study and give myself time to explore, digest, and apply what I read.

In Soul Keeping, John Ortberg explores the enigma that is the human soul and how we should care for the innermost part of our beings. Ortberg describes the should as the thing that "integrates your will (your intentions), your mind (your thoughts and feelings, your values and conscience), and your body (your face, body language, and actions) into a single life". He explores how our souls long to connect, mainly with God and different things in our lives that drain our soul of its health. Ortberg draws heavily upon conversations and wisdom from his friend and mentor Dallas Willard.

The book resonated with me because there have been times I've literally felt like my soul was dying. Ortberg's book provided good insight on how to address soul issues from the inside, how to distinguish between what is causing your soul's unrest, and ways to simplify and declutter your mind in order to seek peace. This is a heavy read as far as substance, content, and application, but not necessarily readability. Ortberg's style is approachable and relatable.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to post a positive review.

Wow! I can't wait to read this book again and glean more nuggets for my hungry soul. I love how Ortberg talks in a language I can understand but at the same time feeds me so deeply! So much to grow on! Thank you John, for your honesty about your own struggles and hunger. I could relate to so many of the vignettes of struggling Christians. Just in time for my Christmas gifts!

We did this in my small group. It was interesting in week 1, we opened by asking everyone to define what their soul is and what does it do? It became obvious, everyone felt they had one, however describing it and it's role was something many had not given a lot of thought to. We ended week 6 asking the same question, and their responses were encouraging. Now they know it is their responsibility to nurture a healthy soul and how to do it. John Ortberg and his friendship with Dallas Willard is nothing less than inspiring! The video content is clear and easy to follow. I heartily recommend this for small group study....
