Publisher's Description

Wilderness and Weather Are Easily Overcome. But Betrayal?

Annie Justice sees things differently. Her unconventional condition, synesthesia, helped make her one of the most sought-after stained-glass artists in the country. And teamed with her German shepherd, she’s just as successful in her work with the K-9 Search and Rescue Team, finding people seemingly hidden from others’ eyes. But no one knows her expertise for hiding the childhood insecurities that plague her—until Jed Curry comes along. Then the search for a missing child goes awry, and Jed must reveal his true identity. He’s prepared for Annie’s anger, but not the hurt. And neither of them is prepared for the real trial ahead—something far more sinister and dangerous than their search. Can Jed and Annie overcome their unknown enemy—and the insecurities and secrets keeping them apart—before it’s too late?

Someone wants Annie to fail…

either that, or he wants her dead.

Annie Justice has always been different, thanks to a rare condition allowing her to see things others do not. It’s a blessing and a curse. The blessing? Annie and her dog, Kodi, have become one of the most effective search-and-rescue teams ever. The curse? It’s kept her from the only thing she wants: to fit in. But she doesn’t. Not anywhere.

Jed Curry, a producer of hit reality TV shows, likes that Annie’s different. Different sells. Which is why he wants her on Everyday Heroes. But Annie has no interest in the show. Or the man.

Then threatening e-mails kick off events that send Annie and Kodi—and the irritating Jed Curry—straight into the path of danger. Joined in a race against time and a cunning adversary, Annie and Jed struggle to work together. Because if they don’t, it could cost them—and a lost little girl in the Oregon wilderness—everything.

READER’S GUIDE INCLUDED

Story Behind the Book

"After my mother died, I realized that the way I lived my life was essentially her legacy. This book grew from that realization. Annot ("Light"), known as Annie, has always felt like the ’odd man out.’ For all her success, Annie still doesn’t feel like she really belongs. To give the story realism, I drew on my own experience as a member of the Jackson County Search and Rescue organization; on a friend who has Annie’s condition of synesthesia; and on my own struggles to find my place in life and to understand God’s calling and purpose for the gifts He’s given me."

—Karen Ball

Author Bio

Karen Ball, bestselling novelist, is also the editor behind several of today’s bestselling Christian novels. Her love for words was passed down through her father and grandfather—both pastors who shared God’s truth through sermons and storytelling. Blending humor, poignancy, and honesty, Karen’s writing style is a powerful force for revealing God’s truth. She lives in Oregon with her husband, Don, and their "kids," Bodhan, a mischief-making Siberian husky, and Dakota, an Aussie-terrier mix who should have been named "Destructo."

If you like Christian fiction, with just enough mystery and romance to keep you interested, then you will love this book. Karen Ball is a very talented Christian author who skillfully weaves spiritual truths into her stories. I have read all three of the books in this series and highly recommend them all.

The second in a series, but you can read it alone. This book, Kaleidoscope Eyes, was a really fabulous read! So much better than the first one, the first one was good, but just too much traumatic events for one book or one life for that matter for my taste. Annie, the main character is different, and through her life of loves and challenges a reader is really able to go on a great adventure. This book is about really love that makes you giggle and feel giddy. It is also about the important and serious jobs in the world that make a difference in other peoples lives. On top of that is is about the crazy people out there, who's actions just do not make sense in any mind. This book had me smiling, laughing out loud, and screaming at the characters to do or realize what I wanted them to. Karen Ball did really well with this one, every time I thought it was one way, something else jumped in to show me a different direction. It is quite the mystery that you really do not know until the end. Very glad I read this one.

Go, Karen! I couldn't wait to read this and was not disappointed! I do not have synesthesia, but I can so identify with Annot (GREAT name), that it isn't even funny. We're both creative (although I'm a writer), we're both ridiculously romantic and long for a knight in shining armor, and we both have things that make us "different" and struggle to see ourselves through God's eyes. I loved the details about Annie's synesthesia and wish there had been more, and I was really rooting for Annie's SAR mission to find Amberly. Again, Karen has also delivered a whodunit plot where the name of the criminal isn't predictable, and the rest of the elements are great. Eagerly awaiting Book 3...

I loved Annie Justice and I love SAR books. This was an extremely good read and worth your time. I loved how the hero progressed in his faith. I highly recommend this book. Just the right mix of mystery and romance which I love.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  As a writer and editor of fiction, my whole life is make-believe! I love the power of story and words, how we can speak life and truth into our lives and the lives of others. My greatest loves, after God and family, are words, story, animals, nature (especially Oregon!), music, and finding joy in the moment.

What was your motivation behind this project?  As a Search and Rescue member here in Jackson County, I'd wanted for a number of years to write a book that featured the brave folks who give of their time and energy to help others in crisis. And because I love animals so much, I wanted to make the story about K-9 SAR (search and rescue). The core of this story came from my experiences during searches in the wilds of Oregon, especially in the mountains. It's amazing to me how those involved in SAR see things--how their training opens their eyes to details others would never notice. Which led me to the idea of God helping us to see things through HIS eyes, not through the eyes of this world. Combine those with my love for my dad's black German shepherd, Kodi, and a friend's experiences with Synesthesia, and the story unfolded from there.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  First and foremost, a great story. That they'll enjoy the ride and, as they close the book, they'll have a sense of satisfaction in the story. Beyond that, a better understanding of the importance of looking at ourselves and others through God's eyes rather than our human eyes.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I got to spend time with my friends in K-9 SAR, even videotaping a training session with them. It was wonderful to see how the different dogs searched. For the Golden Retriever, it was a game. "Find the lost person! Ohboyohboyohboy!" For the Shepherd, it was all work. Nose to the ground and search, search, search. And yet both were amazingly efficient at their tasks. It made me think about how God works with us as we are, letting us use our unique personalities and tendencies to accomplish His purposes. How He doesn't demand we all do things the same. Instead, He delights in the differences He's created in us and uses them to bless us and others.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  For this project, my sources of inspiration were the wonderful folks involved in the Jackson County Search and Rescue. Wonderful, giving people. People who put themselves at risk to save others.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  The dog pictured on the front isn't my dad's dog, Kodi, but she IS shown on the back cover. That was great fun!
