Product Description

When purple-haired Mayla Strong struts down the center aisle of Salliesburg Independent Christian Church, the bug-eyed congregation strains to get a peek at her pierced nose and lip. But Pastor Paul welcomes her with a huge, infectious grin and baptizes her on the spot.

Determined to make her heavenly Father proud, Mayla's sincere and often hilarious attempts to let Him change her from the inside out takes her into some difficult places. Through it all she grows in faith and wisdom--sometimes through pain, sometimes through humor, but always in a way that is uniquely Mayla.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm married and have two grown children. Last summer I left a twenty-five year career as a director for a Fortune 500 corporation to focus on writing. Just As I Am is my first novel. I've finished the sequel, and am now working on three more books. My husband says I’m busier now than I ever was working for corporate America! When I take a break from writing, I enjoy scuba diving, snow skiing, and riding on the back of my husband’s motorcycle. Oh, and I sing as well, and recently recorded a solo CD!

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to write a book that illustrates how God’s power works in the life of one contemporary woman. Today's youth face different struggles than I did growing up – I know, because my kids are young adults in today's society. In fact, Mayla Strong is the same age as my daughter. I wanted a story that demonstrates how God's love really is relevant for people in every generation, including this one. And I wanted to give people a good laugh.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope people enjoy getting to know Mayla Strong as much as I have. I hope they laugh a lot and maybe get a little teary at the touching parts. And I hope they'll come away with a deeper understanding that God loves each of us - just as we are.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The biggest influence in my life has been my mother. I think that comes through in the book. We faced our share of struggles during my childhood, and at times life was pretty tough. But my mother instilled in me a deep and certain knowledge that I was special, unique, and that God loved me personally, and had a plan for my life. Finding that plan has inspired me to keep reaching for God's best.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  My goal in writing this book was for a reader to turn the last page, sit back with a sigh and say, "That was a good book!" Did I succeed? I’d love to hear what you think. Send me a comment through my website – www.VirginiaSmith.org.
