Publisher's DescriptionJungle Warfare provides a field manual for the Christian in sales: a guide for certain victory in uncertain times. Could a WWII Basic Field Manual on Jungle Warfare have any words of wisdom for sales and business professionals today? Yes - and it may even provide more. Christopher A. Cunningham has taken a prized family gift: his grandfathers Jungle Warfare manual, and adapted its rules of engagement to fit the basic needs of the Christian sales person who is on the front lines of business every day. The parallels are obvious: Stay fit. Keep your wits about you. Know your enemy. Serve your leader well. In todays unsure business climate, those who find a way to keep their faith intact while pushing through the difficulties of market downturns are the ones who will be rewarded. This book is about fighting the good fight and finding inspiration even while crawling through enemy territory. Customer ReviewsAverage Rating:
6 of 6 Reviews Showing: Reviewed by Nicole Miller (Portland, OR), September 01, 2010This book appealed to me for a variety of reasons. One - I'm a sucker for anything WWII-related. Two - I'm a bigger sucker for smart twists on other texts/concepts (another example: James Scott Bell's brilliant "The Art of War for Writers"). Christopher Cunningham's "Basic Field Manual for Christians in Sales" is also a well done book for encouragement and a laugh here and there. He compares worry in our everyday life to the Wild Hogs and Leeches! that the 1941 manual warned of. He also makes very solid comparisons between the manual's instructions and current day business - "If possible, travel with one or more companions." You always need a support system and with God, you're never alone. This book explores all aspects of faith and sales - competition, moving forward, friends and more. Cunningham has compiled a breadth of verses that encourage and inspire. While I'm not in a sales position, but rather a marketing/communications job, I still found much of this applicable to my life and my career. It is a quick read and a devotional-style format and I recommend this for anyone looking for a little encouragement in the workplace. This book was provided by Thomas Nelson through their Booksneeze program. Reviewed by Jennifer D (Hamilton, MT), August 31, 2010Christopher Cunningham received his grandfather's Basic Field Manual on Jungle Warfare. Inspired by that book, he wrote Jungle Warfare, which weaves together sections from the Field Manual with 22 inspirational devotions for Christian salespeople. After the devotions is a frequently asked questions section that includes Biblically-based answers along with quotations from famous people and the Bible. I was not the author's ideal audience. My husband, however, had served in the Marine Corps and now does financial products sales. He looked at the book but didn't read it, saying that the comparisons between jungle fighting and selling seemed forced. I thought that the book was a bit high-level, with basic Christian principles suitable for newer Christians in the sales force. I didn't realize that the book was a devotional. Aside from the devotionals, much of the book was Scriptures or blank spaces for answers. I would have preferred a practical book on how to fight the good fight in sales every day. Cunningham's passion for Christian salespeople shines through this book and I did think some of his devotions were very good, particularly the one to be still. [I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson Publishing through their Booksneeze program.] Reviewed by Bob Garbett (Eastern NC), August 11, 2010“Jungle Warfare: A Basic Field Guide for Christians in Sales” by Christopher A. Cunningham I guess this would be a “specialty market” or niche book. As the name implies, it is meant specifically for those who are in sales. However, the principals the author brings out regarding daily life in the market place or public life are applicable to us all. I am rather reluctant to recommend it for everyone though, because, no doubt, there would be those who would miss the application. Mr. Cunningham takes (literally) the pages of a World War II infantry training manual and applies the advice to the modern sales professional. Each day there is a section of the field manual, followed by Bible readings and a “Battle Plan” (the modern application). This is supplemented with a prayer and sections for personal thoughts (journaling) and prayer requests. Each of the twenty-two daily devotionals is fairly short and should easily fit into the busiest of schedules. This book would make a nice gift for any sales professional. I post these reviews as a member of Thomas Nelson’s Book Review Blogger Program. I receive a free copy of the book, but am not required to give a positive review. Reviewed by Jason Hanselman (Boise, ID), August 10, 2010The authors of the BIble use a lot examples from the military. Some of the best battle scenes of all time are in the Bible. Other times, authors use examples from the military to paint a word picture to make a spiritual truth come alive. Those images were perfect for people lived thousands of years ago. Warfare provided a vivid example to people who were constantly surrounded by wars and rumors of wars. Christopher Cunningham's book, Jungle Warfare leans on that same tradition. He uses the field manual his grandfather gave him as a spring board to building a 22 day "battle plan" for Christians who work in sales. The idea was intriguing to me. Life can be a battle sometimes, and the comparisons might be interesting to learn about and apply. In the end, the idea didn't quite work out for me because the material was a recycle of things I've heard for many years in church meetings and other devotionals. This is not to say that the book might be better suited for someone who grew up in a church, but hasn't done much reading or journaling. I think it might also work as a father-son (where the son is a preteen) devotional. Overall, it's easy to read and does help a person put goals on paper and confront some "heart issues." Reviewed by Hayley (Pickerington, OH), August 05, 2010Jungle Warfare is an interesting combination of a World War II field manual, your typical sales book and a 22 day devotional. The author uses quotes from his grandfather’s World War II field Manual and scripture to encourage Christians in sales to be sure that they are reflecting their beliefs in their sales and meetings. This book has an interesting way of getting you to think about the way you are selling an item and your religious beliefs. The author has an innovative approach to combing sales and Christianity and really conveys his point about being a Christian in sales, and even though it is hard to be one, that Christ has called us to live set apart and that includes every area of our lives, even if we have quotas and sales to make. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Christian and works in sales it is biblically based and very encouraging. I would like to thank Thomas Nelson for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. Reviewed by Godspoetic1 (SC), July 28, 2010This book is an exciting addition to every salesman’s book collection. It is packed full of wisdom and inspiration from the word of God, to give every salesman the knowledge and inspiration that they need to survive in the “jungle” of a world today, as a salesman. It has a unique style, set up like a work book of sorts. The author walks you, the salesman, through 22 days of individual “battle plans”, which includes a field manual, a scripture verse, and daily prayer each day. Then after surviving your 22 days of “battle plans”, you have “field support”. This is where all of your personal questions are answered. Such as, “Is it okay for a Christian to be angry?”, or “What do I do when I get depressed or burned out?” After reading “Jungle Warfare”, I have decided that this book could be applied to everyone’s daily life. We all have a “jungle” to walk through in life. We all have battles that we face. This book could be applied to most any person’s circumstances, whether you are a salesman, educator, doctor, lawyer, police officer, pastor, or even a homemaker. We all go through “jungle warfare”, and that is just why everyone should read the book, “Jungle Warfare”! As per FTC guidelines, I must state that I received a complimentary copy of the book “Jungle Warfare”, from Thomas Nelson Publishers, to read for review. My opinions are expressly my own and are in no way influenced positively or negatively, due to receiving this review copy.
