This creative and accurate portrayal of life in the time of Jesus opens a window into a fascinating world. Taylor's rich descriptions of the landscapes, lifestyles, and rituals mesh easily with the emotional and very personal story of one woman trying to make a life out of what fate seems to throw at her. This exciting and heartwrenching story will fascinate readers and lend new life to a familiar story.

In Diana Wallis Taylor’s Journey to the Well, if you know the story of the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:1-42, you know the outcome of the story. But, do you know how the Samaritan woman got to that point in life? In Journey to the Well, Taylor presents her idea of what could have taken place prior to the woman’s encounter with Jesus. With her eloquent style of writing, Taylor, who happens to have a strong background in poetry and songwriting, helps readers understand Samaritan and Jewish traditions and customs while endearing us to the personal story of “Marah,” the Samaritan woman at the well, along with as a few unexpected tie-ins at the end.

Living in a time when marriage is necessary for survival, Marah, a Samaritan girl, is sure of whom she wants to spend the rest of her life with: Jesse, her childhood friend. Though he is a lowly shepherd, she knows they could be happy together. However, her aunt Reba has different plans for her and arranges a marriage between Marah and Zibeon, a local tanner and widower. Marah becomes unsure of her future. With a recurring, as well as foreshadowing, dream as her only constant source of peace, Marah does what she can with the situation that is thrust upon her, putting her determined, yet caring, personality to good use.

As more characters are added to the plot, Taylor does a good job of keeping each person separate. She describes each individual down to his or her personality traits, which results in excellent character development. Since the events in Marah’s life take place throughout a number a years, the passing of time is quick, but it is achieved smoothly, highlighting the main experiences in a usually simple, repetitive life. The author also does well with placing the reader in the story. As you read, you are there, experiencing Marah’s pain and heartache, as well as her joy and peace. This is present from the beginning, when she finds out her aunt has arranged an unwanted marriage for her, through to the end, when she meets Jesus face to face at the well. The only thing I did not like was that many of the events were described as memories, not present actions. It can be confusing at times, because the narrative switches back and forth, leaving the reader temporarily wondering whether or not events have already taken place. However, it is not large enough of a flaw to keep readers from enjoying an otherwise well-told story. I could not stop reading.

Overall, Journey to the Well is a timeless tale filled with controversy, love, fear, anger, loss, and peace, showing how someone faced with difficult times can continue with hope for the future. I highly recommend this book. – Nicole E. Dynes, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Library Journal

This imaginative retelling of the biblical story of the Samaritan woman who encountered Jesus at Jacob's Well traces her path to that fateful meeting. At 13, Marah, forced into marriage with a man she does not want to wed, must say good-bye to Jesse, the boy she had hoped would be her husband. Her life takes many twists and turns before she meets Jesus at the well. Set in a vividly depicted first century, this absorbing debut novel is populated with charming characters. Readers who enjoyed Anita Diamant's The Red Tent or D.S. Lliteras's The Silence of John will appreciate this fine effort. Recommended for CF and historical fiction collections where biblical tales are popular.

I finished this book with a resounding WOW! What an excellent book. I cannot stop talking about this book. This is my first book by Diana Wallis Taylor and I have to say I am impressed. I must not have been paying much attention when I read the preview of the book because I was almost done the book before I realized that this story was about the woman at the well. My hat goes off to Diana for telling her story in a way I would never have thought about. Always when I have read the account of Jesus meeting her at the well and telling her that she has had five husband and was now with one that was not her husband, I have to admit that I was judgemental about her character thinking that she was an immoral woman. What an eye opener to know that there might have been circumstances beyond her control because of the era she lived that led to her being in that positon. I I loved the fact the Diana told the story starting with her life as a young girl. I am at heart a hopeless romantic so I was delighted when she experienced love. What I especially liked was the fact that Diana took other stories from the new testament and incorporated them into the story lines in ways that I would never have imagined. Diana truly is a talented author to have done that. I believe that every christian woman should read this story. They will truly be blessed. I have also purchased Martha and Mary Magdalene and cannot wait to begin reading them. This book is truly the top of the chart in my humble opinion.

What a refreshing look at the biblical story of Jesus who meets the Samarian woman at the well. I have read this bible story numerous times, but I have never really thought about the woman's story, I just sort of skipped right to the teaching of Jesus. But the author has stopped and has taken a deeper look at verse 18 where Jesus tells the woman "she has had five husbands." This is where this story starts.

The author takes us through Marah's life starting at the age of 13 when she is married to a man that is old enough to be her father. But the age of twenty five she has been married five different times and each husband has either died or left her. This is when she meets the most important man she will ever meet, Jesus, the Son of God.

It was fascinating how well-crafted this story was, with characters that were believable and a story line that will hold the reader's attention. I found this story both engaging and encouraging. It reminds us that Jesus will met us just at the right time and that no matter what our past, He will always love us.

I know I will be recommending this book every chance I get.

This is a wonderful book. The story was so wonderful, it had me on the edge of my seat clutching the corner of the page so I could turn it and read some more! I really recommend this book for women who feel that they'll never get married or have a family or find that one person they'll spend their life with. This really teaches you some things.

Journey to the Well presents an intriging intersection of several well loverd new testament stories. The harshness of life in new teastment Samaria and the struggles for women during that time is vivid and compelling. Given society's views of women at the time, it makes me value even more what Christ has done for me.
