Despite the horror of seeing fifteen-month-old Elizabeth slip away into autism, her mother knew that her bright little girl was still in there. When Elizabeth eventually learned to communicate, first by using a letterboard and later by typing, the poetry she wrote became proof of a glorious, life-affirming victory for this young girl and her family.
I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope, who celebrate their victories, and who keep trying to move forward despite the obstacles. Although she cannot speak, Elizabeth writes poetry that shines a light on the inner world of autism and the world around us. That poetry and her mother's stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step forward--with hope.
Virginia G. Breen is the mother of three children, two of whom are profoundly affected by autism. She has spread Elizabeth's message of hope on television with PBS, Fox News, and The 700 Club, and through a TEDMED talk at the Kennedy Center.

If you have an interest in and a compassion for those dealing with autism, this is a must-read. If you don't know much about autism, this will give you a peek into that world and its challenges. I like how it is written with honesty and hope.

really enjoyed this book, gave me a greater insight into 'not looking on the outward appearance' but looking on the inside. Just because a person can't speak doesn't mean they don't have feelings! Wonderfully warm inspirational book. I learnt a lot from reading it.

This was such an informative book on autism. You felt such emotion for this mother. This child is brilliant. I had no idea they were able to communicate they way Elizabeth did. I had a good cry everytime I read her poetry. There has to be a way to help people with autism. How does this happen to so many children? This mother was triedless in her research to help her daughter. This was one of the best books I have read this year.

I Am in Here - Elizabeth M. Bonker and Virginia G. Breen
The Journey of a Child with Autism Who Cannot Speak but Finds Her Voice
Elizabeth is a thirteen year old girl who lives with the daily challenges of autism. Her family and teachers struggle to learn about autism and try various treatments to help her cope as normally as possible. She goes to a mainstream school and excels, with her educational assistant beside her every day. Even though Elizabeth can’t speak, her poems, sprinkled generously throughout this book, speak eloquently and profoundly, shedding light on what is going on in an autistic mind.
Working with an autistic boy myself, I found this story inspiring and helpful in offering a deeper understanding of autism. Elizabeth’s mother does an excellent job of telling how her family cope with two of their three children suffering from autism. Sometimes I wanted to cry with this family as their patience and faith are put the ultimate test, but most often I rejoiced with them as Elizabeth communicates her deepest feelings in a precise and beautiful way. It’s especially touching to see how this family’s faith gives them strength and courage as they walk this difficult road. Anybody who has an autistic child in their life will find this well written book enlightening and enjoyable.

Autism. Most of you who know me know that this is a passion of mine. I work with many children with autism and am a firm believer that they can do most anything any other person can do. All that's needed is a little adaptation to help them find their voice and for them to express themselves. For many, music is a voice for them. For others, it's poetry, nature, etc. For Elizabeth, it's poetry.
Elizabeth and her mom co-write this book, which is filled with poetry written by Elizabeth. Her poetry offers insight into the world of autism that many of us don't get to hear about. She is a non-verbal girl, but when she gets her letter board, she's an open book. She shares about how she hates when people stare at her and she wishes people wouldn't. She talks about how people look at her when her body does things, and she wishes she could stop it but she can't. She wishes people would respect her and treat her as smart. (By the way, she has quite an impressive IQ!)
Elizabeth's mom writes in between Elizabeth's poetry and shares things from her mother's heart. You can see the persistence in which she has fought for her daughter and the guilt that she has in her heart that she wants to be rid of so badly. You see her joy when Elizabeth expresses herself and you hear her sadness when people treat her differently or don't want to offer to her what she needs. You see the difference caring teachers make in a child vs. the ones that think it's more of a burden to work with Elizabeth.
I think that EVERY person should read this book, but especially EVERY therapist, friend, parent, family member of someone who has autism. You will find yourself tearing up as you read Elizabeth's heart poured out through poetry. You will also laugh to find out how she runs a hard ship when she is writing her poetry! Read this book and tell someone else about it. What an encouraging book for all. I hope that Elizabeth releases more poetry so that we can all have another collection of her writings and into her world of autism.
I received this book free from Revell Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.
