Endorsements

“In this lively portrayal of the reformer, Johnson shows how the distinctive emphases of Calvin’s thought nurture a dynamic and self-critical theology. We best show our debt to Calvin, not by simply repeating his words, but by emulating his dependence on God’s Word and Spirit in discerning what Christian faithfulness requires today.” — Amy Planting Pauw, Professor of Doctrinal Theology, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

I only read part of the book and decided that the views of the author were too liberal for me.

This is an easy read. It is written, I think, for the laity. He states clearly how Calvin saw his world and how it relates to ours. You may not agree with everything he writes but you will come away rethinking Calvin's work. If you are a pastor it should make you want to read the some of the literature recommended. The author tries to get me to see Calvin in our timeframe.

I wanted the book to explain its title of Calvin being a reformer for the 21st Century. He explained Calvin, but didn't find anything new or fresh in its presentation or its content. Calvin was not reintroduced as a 21st Century figure, but a reformer of the 16th Century. I recommend the book for someone just introduced to Calvin's life and basic beliefs.
