Publisher's Description

Discover Jesus Throughout the Old Testament!

The son trudges uphill, bearing wood for his own sacrifice; his father has decided to give him up to death. What biblical event does this bring to mind? Is it Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22, or Christ’s passion in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? The kinship between these two stories is deeper than mere coincidence. Christ is present in the story of Abraham and Isaac. In fact, he is present on every page of the Old Testament.

Christians seem to have forgotten that the Old Testament has everything to do with Jesus Christ. In Jesus on Every Page, David Murray guides the reader down his own Road to Emmaus, describing how the Scriptures were opened to him, revealing Jesus from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. Dr. Murray’s ten simple ways to seek and find Christ in the Old Testament unveil the face of Christ in the creation, the law, the psalms, the prophets, and the proverbs.

Recognizing Jesus in the full breadth of Scripture is important for every Christian. Whether you are preaching Jesus through Old Testament readings or just beginning to discover the reality of Christ in the Old Testament, Jesus on Every Page provides an accessible guide to the increasingly popular subject of Jesus in the Old Testament books. Have your own Road to Emmaus experience and know the Old Testament for what it truly is: full of Jesus.

Okay, so it normally never takes me a month or more to read a book... but this book is one that you must take your time on.

I've been blessed with an amazing Sunday school teacher, who for the past few months (and really ever since I've known her), has spoken on Jesus in the Old Testament. Naturally, when I saw this book and read what it was about I knew I had to pick it up.

David Murray takes you on a journey of seeing the Bible as one great story of our beautiful Savior. He does a fantastic job of showing you Christ in many different Books of the Bible (including Song of Solomon... chapter 16. That happened to be one of my favorite parts). While Christ may not be mentioned by name in these Books, it is hard to deny that He is most definitely there.

I think it's odd how completely blind we are to the fact that Jesus isn't just in the Gospels. He's in Genesis, He's in the Psalms, He's all over the Bible!! However, I am thankful for this book which God is using to open eyes (which includes mine).

This book is roughly 200 pages and is a somewhat dense read. It's not really a sit down with a cup of coffee and relax kind of book. It's more of an intense study to finding the One that brings life to us. God has used this book to increase my thirst for Him and to really seek to see Christ in everything in the Word. I would suggest reading with your Bible in hand, a pen, and probably a highlighter too. I would also strongly suggest opening any time you spend reading this book in prayer because it will be difficult understand without the help of the Holy Spirit.

Great book for anybody wanting to study the Old Testament and find even more of our Savior.

*Note: I received this book for free in exchange for a review.

Jesus may not be mentioned directly in every book of the Old Testament, but He can be found particularly if you look for Him. David Murray in "Jesus On Every Page" describes 10 simple ways to seek and find Christ in the Old Testament and solves the mystery of how to read the Old Testament for more than just history, rules, poetry and prophecy.

You will want to read this book along with your Bible, a pen, paper and a highlighter. It is a great resource for Bible students, teachers, small group leaders and for individual study. Murray provides study questions for small group discussions which will further aid you in your study.

"Jesus On Every Page" is a helpful resource and one you will turn to again and again. It's a wonderful tool to help you study the Old Testament.

10 SIMPLE WAYS to SEEK and FIND CHRIST in the OLD ESTAMENT

    By David Murray

David Murray opens a way to view the Old Testament that many do not think about, that Jesus is throughout the Bible. His book has two parts; the first tells how the New Testament points out that Jesus is in the Old Testament. The second part takes you through the Old Testament pointing out where to find Jesus. A very well written and informative book that will open the Bible in a way you may have not thought of. In the first part, he gives you, from scripture, what Jesus, Peter, Paul and John tells us about the Old Testament, and that Jesus was there from the beginning. David Murray calls the first part his Road to Emmaus. His book helps us to see Jesus how he really is a part of the whole Bible.

The author writes: "Some surveys put the ratio of Old Testament to New Testament sermons at 1 to 10. Some would like it nearer 0 to 10. But might this imbalance in the spiritual diet of most Christians explain many of the spiritual problems in the modern church and in modern Christians? Or as theologian Gleason Archer put it: `How can Christian pastors hope to feed their flock on a well-balanced spiritual diet if they completely neglect the books of Holy Scripture on which Jesus and all the New Testament authors received their own spiritual nourishment?'"

In addition to this book being about what the title says, it's a book about recovering the Old Testament in general. I love the Old Testament and am so glad to read what David Murray has to say. In the first chapter, after the quote above, he offers a litany of reasons as to why we have lost the interest in and importance of the Old Testament. He's not overly polite in this area, and it's a needed admonition. At one point I thought he was being a little on the negative side, but then I'm biased in already believing how important the Old Testament is.

That's just the first chapter. I very much appreciate the first portion of this book which is not just introductory material. In Part I: My Road To Emmaus, he writes about how when he was a younger lad, he reluctantly became a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament in a small Scottish Presbyterian denomination. This started a study of a subject he first dreaded, but quickly began to enjoy.

The way the book is written is as if he's in a living room speaking with a variety of people. The newer believers should be able to understand him enthusiastically teaching them, and the more knowledgeable Christians will learn a great deal as well. He writes about the Old Testament from the perspective of Jesus, Peter, Paul and John, and how they utilized the Old Testament (a lot!). This is a "popular level" book, not a scholarly one. I would suggest the reviewer who gave it two stars give it another chance, or possibly come back to it in a couple of years after God brings them along in knowledge.

In the chapter on Paul, he wrote, "I decided..." when discovering something about how the Old Testament was quoted. This sounded rather strange, as if he was going about this on his own and not using the wisdom of the church universal to confirm his findings. But this was quickly dispelled, as before this and throughout the rest of the book, he provides ample quotes from people like Christopher Wright, Jonathan Edwards, and many more. Murray is an educated learner, being a Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, having pastored two churches in Scotland and recently starting a new pastorate. So he is teaching us from his own knowledge gained, but providing additional sources of information, which also provides the reader with a nice bibliography. The references are contained in the oft complained about end notes, including Scripture references.

I wanted to write mainly about the first portion of the book since you will find plenty of reviews going over the rest of it. As I was reading the second portion, I found myself not just learning about Jesus in the Old Testament, but also how to read and interpret the Old Testament, which is fantastic. The book has more to offer than just what the title suggests. For those willing to read about this subject, this will be highly valuable in understanding the importance of reading and studying the Old Testament. I highly recommend it.

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

I also read David Murray's short book Christians Get Depressed Too which is surprisingly good, since I expected it to be too basic for me. He's also one of my favorite bloggers and Twitterers.

I was really disappointed in this book. It was a VERY GOOD subject matter, and if Mr. Murray would have taken into account that a lot of his readers would be average everyday people instead of the HIGER EDUCATED, I would have liked it. I was looking forward to it because my pastor had brought this point up many times, but I could not seem to get a grasp on what the author was saying because he used such complex ideas, and opinions of different "scholar's" books and so on.

I was hoping for a straight-forward simple laidout format saying in the "Old Testament" it said this pointing toward Jesus and it refers to Him in this manner. Much easier to understand for us "lay people".

I did however like the idea of the Ministry of the Prophets, the Study Questions, and the Scriptures at the end.

    Sincerely,

    Patti Creek
