Horsley's book highlights the political-historical-cultural context of Jesus' day. He helps the reader to see Jesus living in the real world. Rome wasn't doing us any favors by crucifying Jesus! Horsley seems to be showing his readers that the Empire has not changed... only Christians have changed. His comparison of the Roman Empire to the American Empire is frightening. Why did the world hate Jesus of Nazareth? I'm sad to say that most Christians in the U.S. do not know and many do not seem to care. Horsley's "Jesus & Empire" along with Stanley Hauerwas' "Resident Aliens" were the first of the books I read on my journey to understanding the Kingdom of God vs. the kingdoms of the world. The "American" Christian would do well to read Horsley's presentation of "Jesus in Context" and ask the question: "Am I truly reflecting Jesus in the Empire today?"
