Product Description

Jars of Clay tackles the issue of who we are truly called to be as Christians in a world that is not our home. Gracefully balancing the mirror themes of joy and suffering, the band maintains their distinctive harmonies and signature guitar sounds while musically exploring gospel, blues, rock and organic influences.

I've been a JOC fan from the very first album, I've got every album they put out. To be honest, I did not like this one when it came out, but it grows on you. When you really listen to it and feel it and become a part of the music, it takes you where we all need to go. Worship mode, whether it's in your car, at work, in your home, this CD gets you in that mode. The craftsmanship and musicianship is pure genious. And for those who say it's a failed experiment? Every new album should soun different as a basnd grows and matures, if not why bother anything but thier first album. This album grew on me and is easily my favorite.

I've liked Jars of Clay since their debut CD many years past, but their music has never necessarily been my favorite. It's well done usually (there are a few songs that I have actually despised) but never really amazing, never surprising. Who We Are Instead surprised me. The lyrics are incredible-- "You know I've been unfaithful/ lovers in line/ while you're turning over tables/ with a rage of a jealous kind"-- the sound is different, the mix of blues and gospel with their trademark acoustic folk-rock is unbelievable, and I find myself listening to this CD whenever I have a chance, repeating tracks 2, "Amazing Grace," 5, "Trouble Is," 8, "Lesser Things," and 11, "Jealous Kind" over and over. Another reviewer said that this album sounded like an experiment the band tried and couldn't get comfortable with. I can't disagree more. When I listen to this, I hear layers of vulnerability and confession, a step into themselves that resonates very true.

First of all, let me put your soul at ease that I'm not a Jars of Clay fan...have never heard JoC music before this CD. Therefore, I'm not going to hype it up or anything but just say it's a great album, ok? This was a bit of a musical risk...but this experiment has proved successful. If you love acoustic music, DON'T HESITATE to get WHO WE ARE INSTEAD. It's chocked full of beautiful acoustic guitar, mixed with mandolin, accordion, organs, light electric, violin...all kind of great stuff. From the opening track, a soothing musical ambiance is created. This is definitely a "mellow-out" album, full of soothing ballads for the soul. Very overt spiritual lyrics, too (inc. references to Jesus). "Show You Love" is awesome...beautiful vocals, just a great song. The cover of "Lonely People" is so encouraging. The theme of the album is stated in "Trouble Is": "man, the trouble is, we don't know who we are instead." Most of the songs are rather downbeat, soft meditative numbers, but "Sunny Days," "Show You Love" and "I'm In the Way" increase tempo, without losing that fine musical dexterity to give you that feeling of lieing in a warm sunny meadow. Take it from this new Jars listener...this album will make a fine complement to your Christian music collection.

Easily Jars best! What amazing growth I've seen from this band, especially in their live shows. There are many musical influences on this album, but it all comes out with trademark Jars of Clay stamp on it - definitely more acoustic driven than previous efforts. And that's a GOOD thing.

This album is Jars of Clay at their very best! Very comparable to the debut Jars project. The song Trouble Is is one of the best songs I have heard. Definitely a wonderful album.
