To understand and apply the Bible well, you need two crucial sources of information. One is the Bible itself. The other is an understanding of the cultural background of the passage you're reading.
Only with the background can you grasp the author's original concerns and purposes. This unique commentary provides, in verse-by-verse format, the crucial cultural background you need for responsible---and richer---Bible study. It includes a glossary of cultural terms and important historical figures, maps and charts, up-to-date bibliographies, and introductory essays about cultural background information for each book of the New Testament.
Based on ten years of in-depth study, this accessible and bestselling commentary is valuable for pastors in sermon preparation, for Sunday-school and other church teachers as they build lessons, for missionaries concerned not to import their own cultural biases into the Bible, for college and seminary students in classroom assignments, and for everyday Bible readers seeking to deepen and enhance their study of Scripture.

I have been building my library for more than 30 years, and just recently added the IVP Bible Background Commentary Old and New Testament to it. A thorough knowledge of the history and culture and customs of the New Testament is dependent upon having a good understanding of the Old Testament. The work of Craig Keener has provided to us all aspects of this knowledge and application of these truths in his monumental work. I recommend everyone to purchase both volumes for their libraries.

Keener is an outstanding bibilcal scholar and he has written a great commentary. The information he provides is great because many commentaries skip background information
This is especially helpful for those who do not have the money to buy a commentary for each book of the NT. Combine this with the "Hard Sayings of the Bible" along with a a good single whole Bible, or 2 vol. commentary, on both testaments, it will make a great beginning Bible study library.

Craig Keener has a winner! I used this Commentary at Bible College for a class on Acts and found it to be priceless when dealing with not background info but customs and manners as well. Now I have ordered it for 4 church members preparing for full time ministry. Thanks IVP! Thanks CBD for carrying a commentary that is balanced and concise.

Truly an indispensible resource for pastors, Sunday School teachers and any student of the Bible. Easy to use and doesn't use highly technical language. Author affirms the inerrancy and authority of Scripture.

An excellent resource for the socio-cultural background of the New Testament. Relevant customs, values, and manner of the people in the New Testament era illuminates the study of Bible. A must for every beginner of Biblical Studies who are interested in the cultural millieu of the New Testament world. Its approach is pastoral not theological.

As a bible college student I have learned to search beyond just words on the page of a bible and to have a hunger for truth. This is an excellent commentary for aiding a hungry student of the word in finding true meaning in bible passages!
