For those wanting a well balanced, short, easily read book that deals with the background of the disputed lands in the middle east, this is one to get. Note I said one, not "the" one to get. Brueggemann does try to be balanced as he takes us back to the conquest of canaan by the jews and on up to the current fighting and claims of both arab and jew concerning Israel. He is not dispensational, so while he views Israel as having a right to exist within secure and recongnized borders, he sees no "divine" right to the lands in questions. He is a liberal scholar, yet does not romanticize the arabs in this conflect. His is an appeal to both sides to get rid of the extremists in both camps and come to agreement. He does not pretend this would or will be easy, but by stating that both sides may be overstating their case in current negotiations, he believes compromise by both sides can get this done. I do not share his hopes. Tho I am dispensational and see a much greater role for Israel in the end of days and in the millennium, I still give him four stars. He does attempt to be fair, and gives both sides and their adherents something to chew on. Good book, nice price. Only about 100 pages. You can read it in a couple of hours. Buy this one
