Publisher's Description

Christian Encounters, a series of biographies from Thomas Nelson Publishers, highlights important lives from all ages and areas of the Church. Some are familiar faces. Others are unexpected guests. But all, through their relationships, struggles, prayers, and desires, uniquely illuminate our shared experience.

As an inventor, astronomer, physicist, and philosopher, Isaac Newton forever changed the way we see and understand the world. At one point, he was the world’s leading authority in mathematics, optics, and alchemy. And surprisingly he wrote more about faith and religion than on all of these subjects combined. But his single-minded focus on knowledge and discovery was a great detriment to his health. Newton suffered from fits of mania, insomnia, depression, a nervous breakdown, and even mercury poisoning.

Yet from all of his suffering came great gain. Newton saw the scientific world not as a way to refute theology, but as a way to explain it. He believed that all of creation was mandated and set in motion by God and that it was simply waiting to be “discovered” by man. Because of his diligence in both scientific and biblical study, Newton had a tremendous impact on religious thought that is still evident today.

If you want to be motivated and challenged by the story of an incredible life, "Isaac Newton" by Mitch Stokes will leave you fascinated by how much one man can contribute in a lifetime.A part of the "Christian Encounters" series published by Thomas Nelson, this little book tells the story of Sir Isaac Newton, the greatest figure in the history of mathematics and science ... but don't let that scare you! The book is an easy, enjoyable read about the man, not the math!Any reader can find themselves challenged and motivated reading about how Newton accomplished some of the greatest scientific and mathematical discoveries by the age of 24. Even though Newton spent his life as a philosopher, physicist, inventor and astronomer, his work was motivated by his faith. Newton didn't simply believe theology and science could exist harmoniously, but rather science was a key way of explaining theology. Although Newton wasn't known as a great theologian, he wrote extensively more about theology and religion than all of his other work combined. This very private man, who avoided the spotlight and waited years to share with the world his greatest discoveries, was a towering intellect complete with all the flaws of any ordinary person. It will leave you wondering just how much you can contribute to humanity if you tried half as hard as Newton did.

This book is a biography of Isaac Newton. The reader learns that Newton was not only a great scientist and mathematician, but also a Christian. It describes Newton's theological studies as well as his scientific ones. The reader learns about Newton's birth after the death of his father, about his childhood and education, about his studies and experiments, but also if his intense interest in theology. Newton saw his scientific studies as a way to worship the Creator. He believed that as he studied God's creation he would learn to know God better. He had a deep love for God's Word, the Bible. It is commonly known that Newton was a Christian, but what is surprising to the reader in this biography is that Newton was also theologian, and that his scientific studies closely linked with his relationship with God.The reader also learns that Newton was a private individual who craved solitude. This personality trait allowed him the time he needed for his studies, and many of his greatest discoveries were born of this solitude. Another result of Newton's solitary nature was his reluctance to publish some of his findings. He seemed to be more interested in the knowledge he gained than in public acclaim for his discoveries. Stokes" biography also describes some of the controversies that Newton's findings caused in the scientific community. This biography gives us a glimpse of Newton's personality that most biographies do not. There are also clear explanations of some of his theories. To the casual reader, or one unschooled in mathematics and science, the explanations are challenging, but to one who is researching Newton's theories, the explanations are helpful and can be understood with perseverance. Stokes' biography of Isaac Newton is an excellent resource for the junior high or high school student. The information about his scientific work is helpful in the student's research. The insights into Newton's character will keep the student engaged in reading the book.

Isaac Newton by Mitch Stokes is one of the new, short biographies in the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson. Small enough to slip into a purse, these paperback biographies are perfect for slipping in quick snippets of biographical reading throughout the day.Isaac Newton proved to be fascinating reading for me, having known little other than the typical myths about the discovery of gravity and such. I particularly appreciated Stokes attention to Newtons faith, particularly in this post-modernistic age where Newtons approach to backing up science with quantifiable mathematics has been used by many atheists to try to shove Newton out of the picture (hed be horrified, as he was incredibly devout and opposed to atheism.)Stokes background in philosophy, religion, and science studies make him an ideal author covering Newtons life as he can approach it from so many angles explaining Newtons scientific work with a great deal of personal understanding, and delving into the finer details of Newtons theology that are well, finer than many readers will likely understand the significance of (yes, that includes me at times).I was entirely captivated by this account of Newtons life and highly recommend it to readers interested in exploring both the life, science, and deep faith of this scientific genius who is well known by many, but who is often robbed of his deep adherence to the Christian faith.

At first as I opened this book I thought I might have a very long dry read ahead of me, but I was acctualy surprised at the amount of information about Isaac Newton I did not know about! Newton was a was an amazing scientist but also seemed to have a great faith and trust in God. He was truly given a great gift. I don't understand many things about science but this book was very insightfull. You see that Isaac Newton isn't just the guy who had an apple fall on his head that you hear about in school! He was a world famous scientist, mathematician, astronomer and through Newton's life he has changed the world and still continues to have an effect even long after his death. In his own words, To celebrate God for his eternity, immensity, omnisciency and omnipotence is indeed very pious and the duty of every creature I am challenged and inspired in just reading the story of how God used this man. So if you ever get a chance to pick up this book and read it! I would recommend this book to you!
