The Bible says to "go and make disciples" but some people struggle with this. This book asks "Who is investing in me?" and "Whom am I investing in?", then explains how discipleship works and how to get involved in it. I thought the topic was interesting but the book was rather dry. I did enjoy the testimonies at the ends of the chapters.
The Invested Life is a book that explains the importance of discipleship. The author stresses that all Christians have a need to have a mature Christian invest their time training and encouraging them to lead more productive lives serving Christ. Likewise, the author also makes a strong point in that it is also the disciple Christian's duty to return the favor and being a mentor for younger, less mature Christians in our life. The book also instructs its readers by explaining what real discipleship looks like and what we need to look for when finding someone to disciple us as well as what we need to teach those we disciple. The author also used many testimonies, Biblical examples, and Bible verses in each chapter to teach the concepts that were being explained.
Joel C. Rosenberg emphasizes that every follower of Jesus Christ should be able to answer two simple questions:
Who is investing in me?
Whom am I investing in?
Rosenberg explains how Jesus made disciples and commands us to follow his lead. He gives lots of biblical wisdom and practical advice on how to be discipled and how to turn and disciple others. He also gives stories and testimonies of the effectiveness and multiplying effect true discipleship has had in believers lives.
This book has really challenged me and caused me to stop and think through biblical discipleship on a practical and intentional level. It's gotten me excited about beginning a journey of true biblical discipleship, something I'd never before thought a whole lot about. I'm in the process of prayerfully pursuing discipleship. I believe all Christians will glean something from reading this book and I highly recommend it!
