Product Description

The Handbooks for Old Testament Exegesis series seeks to present the reader with a better understanding of the different Old Testament genres, and provide strategies for preaching and teaching genres. These volumes are primarily intended to serve as textbooks for graduate-level exegesis courses that assume a basic knowledge of Hebrew. However, the series is also accessible to those without a working knowledge of Hebrew, in that an English translation is always given whenever Hebrew is used.

Publisher's Description

The Old Testament displays a remarkable literary and theological unity through a variety of genres. But applying a single, one-size-fits-all method of exegesis can lead to confusion and misunderstanding. A valuable reference tool for students and pastors, the Handbooks for Old Testament Exegesis (HOTE) series provides readers with an enhanced understanding of different Old Testament genres and strategies for interpretation. The inaugural volume in the HOTE series, Interpreting the Historical Books begins by exploring the components of narrative-setting, characterization, and plot-and then develops the major theological themes in each of the Old Testament historical books (Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther). As readers work through Interpreting the Historical Books, they will begin to see and interpret the narrative writings as the writings were intended to be understood. A glossary defining technical words and samples of moving from exegesis to proclamation make this handbook practical and user-friendly. All written by accomplished teacher-scholars at leading evangelical schools, forthcoming handbooks include the following: Interpreting the Psalms Mark D. Futato (Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando) Interpreting the Prophets Michael A. Grisanti (The Master's Seminary) Interpreting the Wisdom Literature Richard L. Schultz (Wheaton College) Interpreting Apocalyptic Literature Richard A. Taylor (Dallas Theological Seminary) Interpreting the Pentateuch Peter T. Vogt (Bethel Seminary)

    Minister of the Lord
The material covered in this book goes into further detail about the historical setting, characters, main intent or genre of the author. It is written to make one think deeper into the scripture as oppose to surface reading. Pay attention to the importance of the location, the meaning behind the intent of the conflict or genre of the author, the sequence of events, cultural and historical background information, such as, West Semitic myth. What this all culminates to is a homiletical strategy designed to make one ask questions and research further for clearer understanding of application and meaning of text. Although it appears that the material is align with a literary view, one can surmise from the process stages for biblical and theological analysis. This overall homiletical strategy will remove any dependency one may have on just grabbing a commentary without first going through a process of establishing what questions one need to ask and research for a clearer understanding of how to exegete scripture. Various software packages are an excellent resource to expedite the research and analysis process.
