In 1534 at Angouleme he began the work of systematizing Protestant thought in the Institutes of the Christian Religion, one of the most influential theological works of all time.
Publisher DescriptionHendrickson offers a one-volume hardcover edition of one of Western Christianity’s foundational works. Re-typeset into a clean and modern typeface, this edition is easy to read for the modern eye. This book will appeal to libraries, seminarians, pastors, and laypeople. Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin is an introduction to the Bible and a vindication of Reformation principles by one of the Reformation’s finest scholars.
At the age of twenty-six, Calvin published several revisions of his Institutes of the Christian Religion, a seminal work in Christian theology that altered the course of Western history and that is still read by theological students today. It was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541, with the definitive editions appearing in 1559 (Latin) and in 1560 (French). The book was written as an introductory textbook on the Protestant faith for those with some learning already and covered a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone. It vigorously attacked the teachings of those Calvin considered unorthodox, particularly Roman Catholicism, to which Calvin says he had been "strongly devoted" before his conversion to Protestantism. The over-arching theme of the book---and Calvin’s greatest theological legacy---is the idea of God’s total sovereignty, particularly in salvation and election. Customer ReviewsAverage Rating:

A few days later, I heard that John Piper had never accomplished the feat! As one whose reformed theology is blossoming, I determined to read what Calvin had to say for himself, since my knowledge of Calvinism had been completely secondhand. This is a slow, difficult, and sometimes confusing read, but it is well worth the disciplined effort to make it through this massive text. Although I still struggle to support some of the traditional tenets of Calvinism, I am at least better informed now and feel as if I know the great reformer better. Reviewed by N.Buzz Fanion (Houston, Texas), March 29, 2010Your right!! irresistible price. But more important more a great addition of this classic. No one in vocational ministry should be without it in ones library. Be you 100% agree with Calvin or not, this work is foundational in theological studies. This version was put together nicely. Reviewed by John W. Rivett (Waterville, Qc,), December 31, 2009This is an excellent edition, with a challenging read that is of course first class and invaluable to the thinking christian. Reviewed by Luke Peterson (Wake Forest, NC), December 05, 2009Excellent price, and excellent book. I got this as a bonus when I ordered Calvin's 23 Volume Commentary set, and it is wonderful. Reviewed by Ryan Dammarell (Kennewick, WA), October 16, 2009I ordered this product recently because the price was to good to pass up. I got it under the "slightly imperfect" section. The product came faster than scheduled and in great condition. Christianbook continues to make furthering my understanding affordable and reasonable. Thanks! Reviewed by Tony Dean (Chino, CA), December 09, 2008He is one of if not the greatest Reformer in the Reformation. It is a must read and good reference tool. Reviewed by Richard Evans (Charlotte, NC), September 18, 2008This is a volume that is not to be read, it needs to be studied. So many changes from then to now are errors. The gold standard by which to evaluate where you should be. Write a review of Institutes of the Christian Religion Other Customers Also PurchasedFind Related ProductsAuthor/Artist Review |
