Publisher's Description

Most books on innovation make it sound as if successful innovation is the end result of a carefully followed recipe. But the simple fact is that when it comes to any new venture, failure is the surest horse to bet on.

Respected pastor and author, Larry Osborne, explains how understanding this dirty little secret behind innovation can bring both stability and creativity to organizations, especially those with teams of people that focus on innovation, creativity, new ideas, and problem-solving. Using the wisdom and principles found in this book, you will be free to lead dynamically without causing uncertainty or insecurity in your organization.

In Innovation’s Dirty Little Secret, you’ll learn:

  • How to foster innovation’s most powerful igniters and accelerators while avoiding the most common killers of innovation
  • How to recognize and break through ceilings of complexity and competency
  • The six pitfalls of growth and what you can do to avoid them
  • The three questions every leader needs to ask before launching any new endeavor

This is a fantastic book which speaks to the root of innovation. Mr. Osborne provokes you to come to terms with where you stand as a leader in whatever capacity you serve in. For me, this book has opened my eyes to the mistakes I am making and to the areas where I need to improve in. It also stands as a reminder that I am only human. It digs into topics such as barriers of growth, the perception of innovation, and overcoming frequent mistakes most leaders make.

As Executive Director of Voice4Society, it is imperative that I acknowledge my shortcomings in an attempt to progress in my position_.and this book has helped me recognize some of the common pitfalls I was headed towards. After all, the saying, "What you don't know can still hurt you", is quite true.

In this book, the information is presented in a cohesive manner. If I could change anything, it would probably be to add a "Notes" page after each chapter or after each section. The book reflected biblical truth that is vital in the field of organizational leadership and management. I would recommend this book as a resource for any leader, especially those in the not-for-profit sector. With that said, it's a permanent part of my bookshelf now!

Go to any leadership conference and you will find a parade of successful, innovative leaders who take bold risks and live on the cutting edge. What the conference won't tell you is that most innovators fail. Accepting and adapting to that one fact will set you on the road to bringing creativity and stability to your life and organization. That is the theme of pastor and author Larry Osborne's latest book, Innovation's Dirty Little Secret: Why serial innovators succeed where others fail.

Osborne divides his book into seven parts:

Part one focuses on the idea that because most innovations fail, leaders need to have an exit strategy. When we think of innovation, we think of someone who takes crazy and wild risks. Osborne believes that a successful serial innovator takes carefully calculated risks and practices flexibility.

Part two explains how to ignite innovation. Successful innovators start with the problems that frustrate them the most, as well as where they can make the greatest difference.

Part three demonstrates how mission statements, a bias for action, having a champion for the cause, and planning in pencil help accelerate innovation and move the creative process forward.

Part four describes how significant failure, overuse of committees, surveys, and yesterday's successes help to derail creativity.

Part five explains how to break through the barriers of competency and complexity, when to seek out new advisors, and the need to periodically change both the rules and traditions in order to become more creative.

Part six emphasizes the importance of vision and the leader's role in casting and sustaining it.

Part seven reminds each of us that rather than focus on our needs today, we need to keep our attention focused on the next generation.

The author uses a number of both positive and negative examples from his own life and church to describe his ideas and principles. Not only does it reflect real life, but it also shows humility. The author is not an ivory tower guru, but one who learned the hard way, reflected on the lessons, and is now passing them on to others.

The only negative I can find is that the book is very short (171 pages) and only gives a brief overview of each concept. It whets one's appetite for more, but you will need to do your own research to take each concept further. Because of the brief treatment of the topic, it seems like it should be a paperback book than a full-priced hardback.
