The book targets 6 to 9-year-olds, but, let's face it, most youngsters don't understand puns and word plays, so this book will bring groans and mild chuckles to adult readers, but kids will need someone to explain most of the jokes to them. Nevertheless, some of the riddles are so absolutely terrible they force you to laugh. My favorite is, "Who was the first Irishman mentioned in the Bible? Answer: Nick O'Demus."
The book features outlandish cartoons by Jared Lee that are every bit as silly and ridiculous as the riddles they depict, but, in many ways, they will be more entertaining to young readers than the riddles themselves. As children age and get to know more about the Bible, as well as more about humor and comedy, they will gain more laughs from this book. Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Christine M. Irvin5 Stars Out Of 5August 14, 2010Christine M. IrvinAuthor Mike Thaler and illustrator Jared Lee have teamed up once again to create a book that presents a humorous twist on Biblical ideas. This time around, the duo has put together In the Big Inning: Bible Riddles from the Back Pew (make sure the title is in italics), a book filled with Bible-related riddles. For example, the title of the book comes from this riddle:Q: How do you know God is a baseball fan?A: Because he starts off the Bible, In the big inning.Another one:Q: What is Gods favorite food? A: PraisensAnd so it goes. The illustrations are similar to that of the other books by this pair as the ones in this book are again done in a bright, expressive cartoon style. This Bible verse is given as a reference for the book: I will now put forth a riddle unto you. [Judges 14:12]What I Like: This is a great book of Bible-related riddles. Some I had heard before; some were new. All are good. What I Dislike: Nothing.Overall Rating: Excellent.Christian Children's Book Review
Christy Lockstein5 Stars Out Of 5August 5, 2010Christy LocksteinIn the Big Inning by Mike Thayer & Jared Lee is a hilarious book of silly riddles and puns about the Bible. First Mia's review: I liked this book because sometimes it made me laugh, but I didn't understand a lot of the jokes. My favorite one was: What kingdom in the Bible made the best sandwiches: Ba-baloney-a! I liked the pictures, and my favorite ones were the proph-sea, the mini-stir, and Son-rise. It made me want to learn more about the Bible stories so that I can get the jokes better. Now my review: As an adult, I thought the jokes, which are mostly word plays, were hilarious, but I often had to explain many of them to Mia, so I wouldn't recommend this to kids seven or under. Most of them will go right over their heads. However, this is a perfect book to get a laugh from older kids, especially for breaking the ice with junior high students. The illustrations add to the humor, and even when Mia didn't get the jokes, she enjoyed looking at the pictures. I plan on using these jokes to torture friends and family often!
