Christine Sunderland is the author of Pilgrimage and Offerings and has been interested in matters of belief since the time her father, a Protestant minister, lost his faith.

Today she is Church Schools Director for the Anglican Province of Christ the King and Vice-President of the American Church Union (Anglicanpck.org). She has edited The American Church Union Church School Series, The Anglican Confirmation Manual, and Summer Lessons. She has authored Teaching the Church's Children and seven children's novellas, the Jeanette series, published by the American Church Union.

    Tell us a little about yourself.  Born in Fresno, California, in 1947, I am one of the early Baby Boomers. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and experienced the commotion of the Vietnam protests during my college years. I lived in Canada for some time and returned to California with my young son in 1977. While working as a secretary, I met my present husband, a company executive. When my husband retired in 1992, we began to travel regularly to Italy, France, and England. Because of this remarkable opportunity to visit the home of Western Civilization, I studied history so that I would understand what I was seeing. I audited classes and read and read and read. The study took me back to the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the foundation for Western thought. I soon understood what scholars mean when they say we cannot understand the present without understanding the past.

    What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to create a work of fiction that would address the lessons of history in terms of faith and culture, telling a compelling story about choices made in life. INHERITANCE, the third in my European Trilogy, set in England, explores the drama of a girl faced with the tyranny of our politically correct assumptions today, but set against the backdrop of the history of Christianity in England.

    What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope they enjoy the story of Victoria as she faces choices of life and death. I also hope they are encouraged with the portrayal of the fantastic legacy God has given us through the Church in England, with her drama of liturgy and pageantry, of saints and sacrifice.

    How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I love England, and it has been a true blessing to write about her churches and abbeys, and her marvelous (as in full of marvels) history, going back to St. Joseph of Arimathea in Glastonbury. As English speakers, we have been given a tremendous legacy, indeed, one of the inheritances the book is about.

    Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My greatest influence would be God in Christ through His Church - the lives of saints and ordinary folks, sermons and spiritual advice, and many writers over the last few decades: Novelists C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, Dorothy Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, P. D. James, Michael D. O'Brien, Kazuo Ishiguro, Kim Edwards; the poet T. S. Eliot; historians Paul Johnson, Dom Gregory Dix, Russell Kirk, John R. H. Moorman, Frank E. Wilson, Thomas Cahill, Gertrude Himmelfarb, Diana West, Joseph Pierce, Peter Brown, John Richard Neuhaus, Paul S. Russell, Walter McDougall, Margaret Visser; the Christian mystic Evelyn Underhill.

    Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I am a member of the Anglican Province of Christ the King (APCK), a traditional Episcopalian denomination that left the more liberal mainline church in 1976. For many years I taught Sunday School in our local parish and eventually, with our Bishop Morse (now Archbishop Emeritus), developed a curricula for the APCK (Anglicanpck.org). I currently serve on the board of the American Church Union (ACU), the publishing arm of the APCK, and have written a children's series of novellas for the ACU, the Jeanette Series, as well as various parish materials. I am presently working on a mystery set in Rome and Provence about Mary Magdalene.
