Dr. Jeremy Cramer is a young doctor on the verge of a cutting-edge medical discovery. But his research is derailed when Cramer's son is infected with a rare fatal disease. Now as he races against time to save his child's life, Cramer will make a decision that could shatter his career. Informed Consent is a pulse-pounding medical thriller that complements the current popularity of hospital dramas. With non-stop suspense, snappy dialogue, and witty humor, author Sandra Glahn takes a look at some of today's hot-button issues through this provocative story.
Sandra Glahn ThM teaches journalism, creative writing, and the role of women in ministry at Dallas Theological Seminary, her alma mater. She is the author of the Coffee-Cup Bible Series and is co-author of eight additional books, including the CBA bestseller and Christy Award finalist, Lethal Harvest. Glahn is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in aesthetic studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. She serves on the board of the Evangelical Press Association, the Dallas Christian Medical/Dental Associations, the women's board of bible.org, and is the fiction panelist for The Writers View.
Medical doctrines and ethics, intense relationships, drama and disease; if that’s what you’re looking for, then Sandra Glahn’s Informed Consent is what you want. Jeremy Cramer, an intelligent medical researcher, is on the verge of a breakthrough involving the thymus, a part of the body used for bodily defense against disease. Unfortunately, he is caught in a dilemma. His marriage and relationships with his kids are collapsing. On top of that a female coworker and friend, Devin, has contracted HIV through an accidental mishap, and when Jeremy moves forward to complete his goals, he’s left with a tough decision. Does he work to develop better medicines for HIV and AIDS, or does he continue his current research for answers to questions he has had all his life? And what will he do about the painful fact that his marriage is failing and Devin feels that he’s the culprit for her condition?
Glahn uses a lot of imagery, including plenty of similes and analogies. However, she uses a lot of dashes in her writing, and whereas dashes help bring dialogue and thoughts to life they can also draw attention away from the story if used too often. The relationships between the characters seem very accurate to those of the real, modern-day world. The author has done well in this regard.
Throughout the story, Jeremy manages to juggle crisis after crisis fairly well, from furthering his progress in his work to repairing his damaged relationships and healing emotional wounds. He’s my favorite character in the book along with an advisor named Barlow, whose thoughts on medical ethics are strong and relate to the title of the story.
This is a solid story. It has a lot of drama, and it deals very closely with the emotions, relationships, and the problems we face. Readers will appreciate the pacing of the narrative, the book’s writing style, and the range of scientific information shared at a layperson’s level.

Reviewed by Michelle (Arizona), November 03, 2007 I almost didn't accept this book to review as I had SO many to read, but the subject matter intrigued me. Now I'm glad I took this book on. I'll tell you why...Informed Consent is one of the most emotional, suspenseful, intelligent, and exhilarating stories I've read in a long time. The up-close look into marriage issues, grief and loss, and biomedical/ethical subject matter makes me rank this amazing novel as one of the best I've read this year. It is SO obvious that the author did a lot of research and she addressed the subject with insight and compassion. This story moved me to tears numerous times.
In some ways Informed Consent--which is a perfect title for the story--reminded me of a movie I watched starring Denzel Washington. In the movie he was stuck in an impossible situation and yet found a way to fix the problem. His solution was totally insane, but it sure made you think about the desperation people feel when they long to save a loved one, but face seemingly impossible barriers along the way. Informed consent tackled some really tough issues with finesse.
I'm reluctant to share much detail regarding this awesome novel because it's very suspenseful and I don't want the reader to miss out on the anxiety-provoking twists and turns by tipping them off to some of the dilemmas and solutions. But I will say that this story not only provokes intelligent thinking, but it makes you ponder spiritual issues as well. I am thoroughly impressed by the quality of the plot, the author's incredible "voice", and the pull this story had on me. I can't say enough good things about it, but I will say that from this point forward I intend to read EVERY book Sandra Glahn writes. 4 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by A.K. Palmer (La Mesa, CA), August 16, 2007 Sandra Glahn's Informed Consent is an intelligent, believable and expertly written mystery that will keep readers on pins and needles. Realistic but not too technical for nonmedical types, too. I loved the develop arch of the main character, Jeremy Cramer, who went from brilliant, slightly clueless husband and father, to deeply feeling and focused dad.

Reviewed by Ginny S. (USA), July 31, 2007 Wow! I couldn't put it down! I was first introduced to Glahn's fiction writing through Lethal Harvest and Deadly Cure. As in her other novels, Glahn uses her creative writing skills to build an entertaining and thought-provoking medical thriller. While the main story is a close look at a family and their lives in the medical world, there are deeper messages of love, forgiveness, sacrifice and devotion. I love reading a novel that has a good story but also has a timely and purposeful message. Glahn's characters face many questions that headline our newspapers today. This page-turner follows Jeremy Cramer, his family, and his colleagues as they are challenged with issues of illness, end-of-life choices, personal sacrifice, and devotion to family. There is a section at the end of the book, "AfterWords", that is a fun read of an interview with the author. Don't read it first, but be sure not to miss it at the end of the book!
