Amidst the layers of unethical practices, supply shortages, and excess murders, a top Louisiana homicide detective loses his heart to a charitable contractor while uncovering a secret about his tragic past. Author BioRobin Caroll has authored eleven previous books including the critically acclaimed Deliver Us From Evil. She gives back to the writing community by serving as conference director for American Christian Fiction Writers. A proud southerner, Robin lives with her husband, three daughters, and one precious grandson in Arkansas. Publisher's WeeklyRomantic suspense writer Caroll (Fear No Evil) combines detective work ethics with construction site surroundings to build suspense and tension between two unlikely love interests. Homicide detective Maddox Bishop is an emotionally scarred man after entering a crime scene in his own home some 18 years earlier and finding his mother's dead body. Set on never opening his heart to a woman, Maddox can't seem to fight the growing bond developing between himself and a potential wrongdoer, Layla Taylor, a contractor and recent victim of heartbreak. Strong wills clash as the two discover they have to work together to unravel the escalating crimes of violence involving every one of Layla's personal and professional contacts. It takes loss of lives and relinquishment of everything, including significant past grievances toward parents, to move Maddox and Layla beyond bitterness before either can embrace a hopeful future. Caroll's work unfortunately does more telling than showing, and the result is a rather clumsily done wannabe love story that gives readers the facts but no feelings for the characters' plights. ChristianBookPreviews.comRobin Caroll's In the Shadow of Evil is a tension-filled story about a hardened homicide detective, a heartbroken contractor, and a building scam that forces this twosome to work together despite their initial mutual dislike. The tangled web of murders, threats, substandard supplies, and disease only becomes worse as Detective Maddox Bishop and Layla Taylor sort out their relationship as well as personal, familial, and spiritual issues.
Layla, a female in the male-dominated world of contracting, is up for a prestigious award until one of her projects is destroyed by an arsonist and a body is found inside the home. Maddox investigates the case, and soon more and more arson-related fires and bombs destroy Layla's projects until she receives a personal threat. Meanwhile, her attraction toward Maddox is growing, but he isnt a Christian. When Layla is right in the heart of danger, Maddox has to learn the true meaning of Psalm 18:2, which says, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." In the Shadow of Evil has a well-structured plot, leaving the reader guessing constantly. Each page is suspenseful and the characters really come to life through their actions, words, thoughts, and prayers. Caroll does a wonderful job of weaving in technical jargon of the police force without bogging the reader down. Caroll's own beliefs about God and prayer are evident throughout the novel and provide a foundation that translates well from the characters into the readers' lives. The book, although a somewhat typical romance-filled suspense story, is enjoyable and had me staying up late to read a few more chapters. It'd make a great gift for women of any age, whether retired or entering the workforce, who enjoy fast-moving plots and puzzles to solve. Located in: South, USA Submitted: July 28, 2010 Tell us a little about yourself. I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I've never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in. I grew up in Louisiana in the 70s as the baby in my familyadored, but never spoiled. (My two older brothers and two older sisters made sure of that.) The writing bug bit early. At 7 years old, I started writing skits and performing them for my family. I've never stopped. I got married in 1989, have three daughtersnineteen, ten, and eightand recently became a grandmother to a grandson. I'm passionate about writing, but also about giving back to the industry that has given me my dreams. I'm the past president of ACFW (2007 and 2008) and am currently the director of the annual ACFW writer's conference. I'd describe myself as Spiritual, not religious, with a diverse Christian background. Bottom line? I love Jesus and will follow Him wherever He leads me. What was your motivation behind this project? Being a Louisianan, news of hurricanes and damaged building supplies made me think about the construction industry. One of my writing friends did a search and discovered some of the shortcuts in the industry. As we began discussing the implications, a plot idea was formed. What do you hope folks will gain from this project? The main theme of this book is forgiveness, as both the hero and heroine must deal with issues of forgiveness. I hope readers get that despite bad things happening, God is always with us. Even when we dont understand why things happen. Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Colleen Coble. She taught me so much like creating a setting as a character, writing strong characters, etc. I dont believe Id be where I am in my craft without Colleens mentoring me. Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I love reading, scrapbooking, cooking, and spending time with my family and friends. Find Related Products |
