Tell us a little about yourself. John Thompson has lived and served in the inner city of Chicago for 30 years. After graduating from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary, John has served as Program Director with a Chicago Inner City Ministry as well as on pastoral teams in four Churches. Since 1998 John has served on the staff of Armitage Baptist Church in Chicago and until recently as Pastor of Discipleship. John has also directed the Chicago Armitage Urban Study Experience (CAUSE), providing internships in urban ministry and has served as President of Chicago Hope, a mercy ministry of Armitage Baptist Church. In the past 30 years John has taught in many Christian Colleges and Seminaries and has served as Adjunct Professor of Urban Ministries at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
What was your motivation behind this project? Half of the people of the world (79% in North America) live in cities of a million or more. If we dont reach and disciple people in the cities, our minister and missionary force will be greatly reduced. The urban population will continue to grow and we must respond by sending people to the urban centers of the world.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My hope is some will be challenged to go and others to support the missionaries who take up this challenge.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? God challenged me to a greater degree that he is bringing the world to our door steps for us to reach.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: We are doing a poor job worldwide in fulfilling the Great Commission of our Lord to Make Disciples. In my new book, "Changing the Landscape of Eternity" (to be released on May 15, 2014), I will provide practical training to the reader on how to make disciples.
