I think understanding the culture of the people in the Bible is fundamental to understanding the concepts of the Bible. This book is well-organized and easily read. My husband and I are using it for our morning devotions. J. Carl Laney, a seminar professor at Western Seminary said in his blog, "the most well-researched, and up to date resource available." I could not agree more.
I usually really enjoy books by Baker publishing. I should have paid more attention to the other one-star review. I would describe as an A-Z selection of unrelated topics, such as Anoint, Arrow, Blind, Borrow, Greet, Inherit, Lamp, etc. While they were interesting in and of themselves, there was no cohesive theme to this book, rather something one might pick and read a random section. I much preferred my other ordered book, Essential Guide to Life in Bible Times, for a concise selection of relevant topics in a sensible order and layout; much more information for 1/2 the price. This was a huge disappointment and a waste of my money.
