How can you live faithfully when you’re not quite sure where life is taking you? How do you find joy and purpose in the midst of the uncertain, the unfinished, the uneasy? Inspired and comforted by Thomas Merton’s famous prayer that begins, "My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going," award-winning writer and teacher Greg Garrett looks back at his own recent journey and tells stories from his life that will speak to anyone who has ever felt that sense of being lost along the way.     Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a writer, teacher, preacher, musician, and father who loves God but used to worry a little too much about what was going to happen next.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I've had a life that I wouldn't wish on anyone, full of sadness and heartache, as well as joy, but when I reflect on that life, it seems to make it possible for other people to learn from it and to reflect on theirs. So something good can come out of my mistakes and heartbreaks, and God can use my story to touch the brokenness in others.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My big life take-away has been that although I have plans and hopes for the future, all of that is always uncertain. The only thing I can be certain of is God's love, and in relying on that love, I have become certain that if I try to be faithful, God will most certainly be faithful.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  When you retell episodes from your life--particularly things that are painful or that you'd prefer not to think about--it can be emotional. But it's also cathartic, to think, wow, with the help of God and the people of God, I got through even this.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  For this book, the strongest influences were other writers of spiritual autobiography: Anne Lamott, Annie Dillard, Dennis Covington, Barbara Brown Taylor. I was also influenced by the sermons of John Claypool, which use elements of his life to help reveal the gospel.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  This book is a sequel to Crossing Myself, my memoir about faith and depression, although it begins after my healing and focuses on the question of what we're supposed to be doing in this life.
