Hurricanes in Paradise by Denise Hildreth is an active scene-changing, point-of-view-shifting book focused on four women who find themselves on the tropical island of Paradise. They arrive at the island’s central hotel burdened with suitcases, carry-ons, parcels, totes, and handbags of every shape and size, but none of these travel trunks carries anything near the “emotional baggage” being brought by each woman. Their pasts include family woes, romantic disasters, career mistakes, physical problems, and spiritual vacuums. As the walking wounded, they see empty spaces in each other’s hearts and souls, so they bond to try to mend one another. Sometimes it is through listening; sometimes it is by sharing their own intimate life stories; and sometimes it is by motivating someone to take a bold step toward personal recovery.

The women have exteriors that seem strong to outside observers. One is a gorgeous fashion model. Another is a best-selling author. Yet another has been a hotel director of guest relations. But it is the widow among the group who has borne the most pain and who has the greatest wisdom to share. Together, the women discover avenues to forgiveness, personal acceptance, and genuine friendship.

Hurricanes in Paradise has the potential to offer a captivating plot and an interesting storyline, however, the execution is sloppy. Clichés and worn out metaphors plague this book. The dialogue is rather flat at times, the plot conflict resolutions are a bit too pat, and the spiritual emphasis is a secondary concern, taking a backseat to interpersonal relationships and lightweight psychology. The book is entertaining and nicely-paced, but it isn’t the thought-provoking “revelation” that a book about women’s relationships should be. – Bethany E. Sievert, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
