It sat on my shelf, patiently waiting in line, while I finished up a couple of other books ahead of it. I am glad I saved it for when I did, for I read it at the perfect time for my life.
God has this very cool way of bringing books into my life at the exact moment I need them - and this book is one I won't soon forget.
Margaret is candid throughout this book, revealing her own moments where she struggled to know God so intimately that she came to deeply hunger for Him. She craved to have Him be her fulfillment, and through many trials and tribulations - as well as the best moments she could experience - she has found time and time again that God is always there to satiate her hunger.
To hunger for Him, is to long to know God in a deep and intimate way.
This is the whole premise of this whole book. As you chomp through it, page by page, morsel by morsel, you find yet another satisfying bite that just fills you up, reminding you to never give up in the pursuit of knowing God intimately in your life.
She reveals the truths of how many people throughout scripture always yearned to know God in deep ways, and through good times and bad, they found Him in the most obscure areas; usually in the quietness of the heart, and the pains of life.
I cannot recommend this book enough to folks out there who have been trying to find out who God is in their own personal lives, and how He can relate (and speak) to them in such intimate ways. As a lifelong seeker of God myself, I can honestly say others - who have the same deep, innate desire (hunger) to know God in such a personal way as I do - won't walk away on an empty stomach (heart) with this book.

Jill JonesOpelika, ALAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great Book, includes study notesJuly 2, 2011Jill JonesOpelika, ALAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do you hunger for God? Do you yearn for an intimate relationship with your heavenly Father? Did you know you can find God in the everyday, common activities of life if you genuinely search for Him and desire to find Him?
Margaret Feinberg has been hearing God in her ordinary, everyday life and has written "Hungry for God" for those of us who want to know the secret. Her book is more a conversation with her readers than just an instruction booklet. After all, developing a one-on-one relationship with God, or anyone else, is personal and unique. No one has a set formula because each individual is different. Feinberg tells anecdotes and stories from her life to prove an intimate relationship with God is possible. She demonstrates that we have to be hungry for that relationship. So hungry, in fact, that the pursuit of it is the most important activity in our life as well it should be. God designed us for a relationship with Him. To give Him less than our all or our best is failing to do what He created us to do.
Many Christians are searching for methods and things to "do" to get into God's good graces; however, we are told over and over in the Bible that it's not what we do—it's who we are. And who we are is what God has created and He desires to spend time with His creation.
If you are looking for a specific formula to satisfy the craving down deep in your soul, you will need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for a conversation filled with proof that God desires a relationship with you, Feinberg has written an excellent book which will encourage you, motivate you and help you hear God's voice in the everyday activities of life. You don't have to move a mountain or swim an ocean to find Him. You don't have to march across the desert or scream from the tallest tree. He is next to you whispering in your ear.

juliea3 Stars Out Of 5great reflection section, so-so bookMay 27, 2011julieaQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3The back cover of Hungry for God, by Margaret Feinberg, states that this book "will help you cultivate the holy intimacy your spirit craves." Wow, that's a pretty impressive claim! And one I was ready to see fulfilled. Really, wouldn't we all like to see the cravings of our spirit fulfilled through holy intimacy?
Unfortunately, after reading this book I do not actually feel closer to attaining a holy intimacy than I was before. What I do feel, though, is inspired to continue seeking that holy intimacy.
The reason I feel inspired by, rather than accomplished in, the quest for holy intimacy is that Feinberg spends the vast majority of the book not in guiding us in our quest, but in describing her own. Certainly, there is value in hearing of another's journey, and Feinberg's was definitely inspirational, even exciting at times... just not entirely relatable for me.
The highlight of Hungry for God, in my experience, was the reflection and discussion section. Here, 10 questions per chapter allow readers the opportunity to go deeper with the main concepts of the book. It is in these questions that readers, if motivated to persist, can potentially advance in their own spiritual journey, and make this journey their own rather than the authors'.

Doreen renewing strengthTampa FlAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Interesting and thought provokingMay 26, 2011Doreen renewing strengthTampa FlAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I received this book from Zondervan free for the purpose of writing a review.
I found this book interesting and thought provoking. She engages the reader to seriously look at our relationship to God and decide how we are going to pursue knowing God. Pointing out that God reaches down to love and care for each individual provides a security for the person doing the searching. The manner in which God cares is personal and individual and she challenges me to look for God in the everyday activities of life, enjoy God at every event and encourage others to do the same. This is an excellent book for the seeking or seasoned believer. It has an excellent study guide for individual or group study.
Booklover105 Stars Out Of 5Great for yourself or for a giftMay 20, 2011Booklover10Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Hungry for God by Margaret Feinberg was a book that I read at the perfect time. I've been craving more and more of God and this book made me want to spend so much time with Him. She pointed out how we can hear God in the everyday things of life, not just when we're in our quiet times. However, we tend to be so busy and so focused on other things that we sometimes miss when God is trying to speak to us. I loved her illustrations that she used in the book and how she showed how God can speak through art, music, nature, etc. He can use anything to speak to us if we'll only listen.
The opening of the book was about what it meant to have an appetite for God. "What does it mean to hunger for You?" Since most of us don't know what true hunger is, sometimes it's easy to forget what it's really like to hunger for God so much that nothing else can satisfy us. So to help her get a perspective on hunger, she fasted. She was honest about how the first day or two were awful and she was moody and anyone that came near her was fair game! After that, though, her body adjusted and it was a little easier.
My favorite quote of the book was "If physical hunger is a set of feelings that leads a person to search for food, then spiritual hunger is a set of experiences and longings that compels a person to search for God. My spiritual hunger grumbles loudest when I feel furthest from God."
I definitely recommend this book for everyone, whether you're in a calm season of your life or if you're in the midst of trials. It's a great book to give as a gift to someone, too.
