The story of Hudson Taylor is one of adventure and excitement - of improbable answers to prayer, opposition from the establishment and triumphs of faith. Even more interesting is the story of the relationship at the heart of it all - the story of Hudson and Maria Taylor.
There are few love stories as enchanting as that of Hudson Taylor, the pioneering missionary, and Maria Dyer. Their relationship and short marriage flourished in the bitterest of circumstances because their lives were firmly rooted in their devotion to God, as well as to each other.
They were a perfect match, (though not perfect people), a couple who show us how to share our lives at the deepest level.
John Pollock draws his material extensively from original letters and papers. What unfolds is a picture of courage and adventure in Imperial China, a lost world of pigtails, Mandarins and dragon-roofed temples. It also shows how Maria played a crucial role in shaping the ministry of a Yorkshire lad who, against oriental and western opposition, changed the way that missionaries work.
A Work in Progress5 Stars Out Of 5December 7, 2013A Work in ProgressQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was looking for an account of Hudson
and Maria (nee Dyer) Taylor's life together
and mission work in China
and this book did not dissappointment.
I really admire them both
for living their faith out and persevering
in the most difficult challenges, hardships
and betrayal by some of their own
countrymen who should have supported
What I find refreshing is how humble
they were and not only mastering
the Chinese language and dialects
but adopting the dress and diet
of those they were ministering to.
They did not have an attitude
of white supremacy so prevalent
in their own western culture and time.
Hudson and Maria were counter-culture!
They wanted to equip the believing Chinese
to minister to their own brothers and sisters.
They knew Christianity did not 'belong'
to any one culture or people.
It was for all willing to follow Jesus
and make disciples.
They truly loved the Chinese
and their legacy continues today through OMF.
Very inspiring read.
This book was informative, well researched
and at times poignant. I highly recommend it!
Ernest Low5 Stars Out Of 5October 29, 2005Ernest LowI happened to read this book just before my expressed my feelings to a girl before she later became my wife. It is an inspiration for me as it is about a man and a woman who commmitted themselves to God and how that commitment brought them through tough times as missionaries in China without causing their love to falter. Even when they lost one of their children to sickness and yet never blame God for it. This book thus has two themes, their missionary work in China and their love for each other. Because they put God as the central focus in their lives, their relationship was all the more strengthened and better for it.
