HEALING GOD'S WAY
Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet
inwardly
we are being renewed day by day.
- 2 CORINTHIANS 4:16
Praying with a friend for healing of an illness is a privilege
and a deep responsibility. We have to be prepared for whatever God's answer turns out to be. While physical healing is our request, we have to agree that God's glory and our spiritual maturity are greater goals. Regardless of how healing comes-gradually, suddenly, or not until the person's entrance into glory-God will answer.
When a friend went through an illness that lasted several years, not a week passed that I wasn't forced to examine the difference between talking about faith and living it out. As a teacher, I taught about faith; but as a sick person, my friend lived it. Each Wednesday at our Bible study, her friends would wheel her into the sanctuary where we met. The room would grow quiet as everyone stared in awe at her joyful countenance. It was as if the roof opened and a light shone down from heaven and God said, "This is my daughter in whom I am well pleased."
Though her disease continued to progress, it couldn't keep pace with her faith. Her family and our community were
touched dramatically by her undiminished faith in God in the face of her illness. She was the manifestation of "not my will, but Thine be done."
My friend came to the Bible study to be ministered to and ended up being the minister. She made all of us realize that we suffer from a disease far worse than her Lou Gherig's disease: the disease of self-reliance. She had become totally God reliant. She put her trust in the One she knew to be trustworthy. Though outwardly wasting away, she was renewed day by day, as were we, through her undying faith.
If something needs healing in your life-body, soul, spirit, or a relationship-know that God's highest priority is your Christlikeness. Just as Jesus fulfilled His purpose in the midst of great pain and suffering, know that we may be called to do the same. But ultimately, whether in time or eternity, healing will come.
Heavenly Father,
I know there are many areas in my life that need healing: spiritual,
emotional, and physical. Bring Your healing in Your time, in Your way. Amen.
For the rest of your life…
pursue ultimate health by pursuing wholeness in Christ.
