"A stronger than he...overcomes him." - Luke 11:22

In our Lord's discourse about casting out demons, His illustration symbolizes His victory over Satan (see Luke 11:14-23). As the stronger, Jesus came upon the boastful strong man and overcame him. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He conquered the satanic foe. We sing about marching on to victory, but actually, since Calvary, we march from victory. Triumph over all hellish enemies, as well as the security of our redemption, was in Christ's final cry of conquest: "It is finished!" (John 19:30). Now, by faith, we make His victory our own. Satan still displays his strength as the enemy of all righteousness and is the unwearied foe of all saints. Only too well, we know that he excites to sin, accusing us before God, and strives to overcome our faith in God and His Word. Calvary's victory over Satan enables us to steadfastly and successfully resist him through all that is Christ, his opponent, is to us. Satan is still a deadly serpent, but Jesus is the brazen serpent who heals. Satan is still a roaring lion whose roars warn us of his attacks, but Jesus is prevailing "Lion of Judah." Satan is still a wolf assaulting the little flock, but Jesus is the good and great shepherd protecting His sheep. Satan is still our foe, but Jesus is our abiding friend. Satan is still a liar and the father of lies, but Jesus is ever the truth. Satan is still branded as the accuser, but Jesus is the advocate. Satan is still the prince of darkness, but Jesus is the light of the world. Satan is still a murderer, but Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Satan may continue to boast his power and position as the god of this world, but our triumphant Lord is ever stronger than the world's hellish deity.
