"Florence Soper Booth"
"Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of
the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the
blind and the lame.” - LUKE 14:21 NIV
When Florence Booth, a Salvation Army worker, first heard of young women being lured into prostitution, she thought the stories were exaggerated. But one morning a girl appeared at Florence's door. Promised a good job, she had come to London only to find the job was in a brothel. The girl managed to escape and found her way to the Salvation Army.
Florence and her husband, Bramwell, began an investigation and formed groups called Midnight Rescue Brigades. The workers went into alleys, cellars, and attics at night to find girls longing for another life. Florence provided a refuge for them.
Beginning with that one home, in the next thirty years, the Salvation Army opened 117 shelters for "fallen" women.
General William Booth said of the rescue effort, "It will constitute one of the most effective onslaughts on one of the blackest strongholds of the devil, and be a means of rescuing tens of thousands of the most despairing.. victims of his fiendish designs."
When the man in Jesus' parable (Luke 14:16-24) sent out invitations to a banquet, the guests had excuses for refusing. The man then issued the invitation to unlikely guests. In the same way, Jesus' invitation to enter into His salvation is not for a select few. No matter how sordid your history, you are welcome to dine at the Savior's banquet-now! Social Reformer, Author, Administrator-1861-1957
