Meet Point of Grace

Four “Worthy Ouachitonians”

It’s hard to believe that only seven years ago, Terry Jones, Shelley Phillips, Heather Floyd, and Denise Jones were just four friends in college studying education and music. But, for the members of Point of Grace, friendship goes a long way back. Heather and Denise were good friends in the fifth grade, and they met Terry in eighth grade. Shelley didn’t complete the foursome until they all arrived at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. In 1991 the four friends formed Point of Grace and began singing on campus and at churches, banquets, and women's conferences. In 1994 they attended the annual Christian Artists Seminar in Estes Park, Colorado. At that conference Point of Grace caught the attention of talent scouts from Word Records. After producing a few demo-tapes and travelling to Nashville, Point of Grace signed a record deal, sparking a new Christian music phenomenon.

A Remarkable Amount of Success
Point of Grace went on to release an unprecedented twelve consecutive number one hits in their first three years on the Christian music scene! Their first two albums, Point of Grace and The Whole Truth, earned a total of five Dove Awards, including the 1996 “Group of the Year” distinction. The have been featured in USA Today and The Ladies' Home Journal and have appeared on a number of national television programs such as “LIVE with Regis & Kathie Lee.” Life, Love & Other Mysteries was released simultaneously with a book bearing the same title. Point of Grace’s most recent release, Steady On, is already immensely popular and the group is spending the Summer of 1998 touring the United States to promote it.

A Witness to Their Fans
The four women of Point of Grace have furious schedules, but they have not hesitated to give generously of their personal time and energy to Mercy Ministries of America, a non-profit outreach to unwed mothers and troubled girls. While on the road, they fund-raise for Mercy Ministries and encourage their fans to choose abstinence before marriage. Shelley Phillips has been amazed at the group’s impact on people: “We get letters all the time from people telling us how much our music's touched them. That's when I realize our ministry and success are way beyond us. We're just four girls who like to sing and got together, and God has somehow blessed us. He's the one, not us, making the impact on others.”

  • Shelley Phillips: Shelley was born in Belleville, Illinois, but grew up in Arkansas. She is married to David Breen. Her favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28, and her favorite movie is ‘Miracle on 34th Street.” She likes snacking on Baked Lays and Diet Coke with lime.
  • Heather Floyd: Born in Abilene, Texas, but grew up in Oklahoma. Her pet Shih Tzu is named Darla. She became a believer at the age of nine, and her favorite verse is Hebrews 11:1. She likes watching the TV show “ER,” and enjoys driving fast (shhhh!).
  • Terry Jones: Born in Marin County, California. Her husband is named Chris, and they have an English Setter named Kensington. She was named Miss Ouachita Baptist University her freshman year. She likes chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies, and her favorite Point of Grace song is “Circle of Friends.”
  • Denise Jones: Born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma. She became a believer when she was six, and her favorite piece of scripture is John 16:33. She and her husband have two dogs named “freethrow” and “alleyoop” to give away their shared love for basketball.
