Meet Calvin Miller

Dr. Calvin Miller is one of America’s most accomplished authors with more than 30 books to his credit, including Star Riders of Ren, The Taste of Joy, Transcendental Hesitation, the best-selling Singer Trilogy, An Owner’s Manual for the Unfinished Soul. His poems and articles have appeared in journals and magazines such as Christianity Today, Campus Life, Leadership, and His.

Miller's newest project is the Incredible Joy Series, which presents his compelling insights on common human experiences. In The Power of Living for God's Pleasure, he discusses what it means to be happy, to live for God's smile on our lives and experience the warmth of his pleasure. The Power of Encouragement encourages us to affirm and care for each other. The Power In Letting Go helps us to simplify our lives and pare down our priorities to those that have eternal value.

The power of his narrative, clarity of his vision, and strength of his voice appeal to Christian and secular readers alike. What is the source of Miller’s creative energy? The answer lies in his personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

It began when Calvin Miller was a boy of nine and attended an old-fashioned Pentecostal tent revival in Enid, Oklahoma, during the last days of World War II. "In this tent, on one of those pew boards, I found myself seated, shirtless and shoeless. . . . Worst of all, I was not ‘saved.’ . . . I listened, sincerely and with fear. Who wouldn’t? . . . Emotion burned like fire through the sawdust chips. Hell, dark as a gospel tent in a power outage, suddenly gaped like a black hole before me. I stood weeping, naked, foolish, and undone. . . . I had no choice. I had to fly into the arms of Jesus. I did." (An Owner’s Manual for the Unfinished Soul)

Since the day of Dr. Miller’s dramatic conversion, his life has borne the indelible mark of the Holy Spirit, and he has served the Lord with dedication and joy. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University and went on to earn a Master’s degree and a doctorate from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. His first pastorate was Plattsmouth Baptist Church in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. After several years, he moved on to Westside Church in Omaha. Since he began his service in 1966 to his recent retirement from the pastorate, the congregation grew from 10 members to over 2,500. After 30 years as a pastor, Miller joined the faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he served as professor of communications and ministry studies, as well as writer-in-residence. He presently serves as professor of preaching and pastoral ministries at Beeson Divinity School in Alabama. In addition to his teaching and writing career, he is a frequent speaker at conferences and assemblies, equipping the church for the task of evangelism.

Dr. Miller and his wife, Barbara, live in Alabama and are the parents of two grown children.
