Meet Alister McGrath
Alister McGrath Posted 5/99
Impressive are the credentials, vast is the wisdom, and invaluable are the works of Reverend Doctor Alister McGrath.
One of the youngest (born in 1953) and most respected evangelical theologians today, Alister studied at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge in England. He then served at a parish in Nottingham before joining the staff of Oxford’s Wycliffe Hall, where he is principal, as well as a lecturer in historical and systematic theology. In addition to his posts at Wycliffe, Alister is Research Lecturer in Theology at the University of Oxford and Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Alister’s superior knowledge of Christian doctrine is evident in his many books, including such works as Christian Theology: An Introduction; A Passion for Truth: The Intellectual Coherence of Evangelicalism; and Reformation Thought: An Introduction. Of Christian Theology esteemed authorities in academia have this to say:
". . . a work of prodigious learning and notable clarity. Alister McGrath here combines a mastery of the history of doctrine with his gift of communication to produce the finest university textbook available in the field." ---Gabriel Fackre, Abbot Professor of Christian Theology, Andover Newton Theological School
"Dr. McGrath’s confident clarity, open orthodoxy, shrewd judgment, and didactic flair should secure for so user-friendly a textbook a long and fruitful life." ---James Packer, Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology, Regent College
"An excellent introduction . . . invaluable as a clear and unprejudiced guide to the whole discipline of theology." ---Keith Ward, Regius Professor of Theology, University of Oxford
A Passion for Truth (an insightful book that explains how evangelicalism can respond to movements such as postmodernism and pluralism), Reformation Thought (an indispensable tool for understanding the ideas of the European Reformation), and other works have received similar recognition. Read one of Alister’s books yourself and you’ll have enthusiastic words of your own to offer.
Oxford, England is where Alister, his wife, and their two children currently reside.
