Bill and Gloria Gaither take their Homecoming Friends "across the pond" for the latest Gaither Gospel Series (GSS) installment. (Some may recall that bass singer Rex Nelon passed away while in London with the Homecoming tour. This project was recorded the next night at Westminster Central Hall.)
Eighteen tunes are included on the audio CD, and the formula that has worked so well in the past is maintained here. Five foot-stomping tunes get things rolling, and then we settle back for Russ Taff's classic anthem "We Will Stand." From there an alternating succession of individuals and groups are featured on songs that vary from traditional Gospel numbers to recent new releases. The pace slows near the end of the project with a Gaither classic, "The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference."
Highlights from London Homecoming include Stephen Hill's blue-eyed soul rendition of "Walk Together Children", "He's on Time", featuring Ivan Parker; and the Homecoming standard "Highway to Heaven." Small groups of singers pool their efforts for feature slots on "Looking for a City" and "Standing on the Solid Rock," and Anthony Burger performs a stirring piano medley.
Unlike other "on location" Gaither projects (Hawaiian Homecoming, Mountain Homecoming, etc.), London Homecoming lacks references to the surroundings (aside from the cover art). Also, no native Brits perform. On a positive note, the production/sound quality is top notch and everything you'd expect in a GGS product is included. London Homecoming should be pleasing to established fans of the series.
