Once again this supposed one-off stint has proven itself a meaningful, yet grossly overlooked institution. Christian alt-rock high priests/elder statesmen, Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos), Mike Roe (77s), and Derry Daugherty (The Choir) have rallied the troops, following the devastating death of fellow "Dog" Gene Eugene Andrusco (Adam Again), and created a beautiful piece of work. Most songs are tightly woven tapestries of Americana written by the prolific godfather of Christian alt-rock, Terry Scott Taylor. Real Men Cry combines well-worn humanness, comedy, faith in Christ, with heavy doses of '60s pop influenced, old-school country. "A Certain Love," a refreshing Bible-belt rocker á la Tom Petty, sparks the disc, while "The Gates of Eden" and "Wild Ride" find the Dogs jangling their way through soaring '60s Brit rock harmonies and still feeling their oats. In the midst of the fun, Mike Roe eases back for a sweet solo ride on the open range of "Real Men Cry." Not to be missed is "Three Legged Dog " a touching, laugh-out-loud autobiographical, back porch romp, as well as "The Mark of Cain", a hypnotic Old West jailhouse story for the ages. Even though Gene's rich, unique voice is missed on Real Men Cry, the remaining Dogs step up and make their best disc yet. --Anthony Barr-Jeffrey |
