Although most Homecoming Friends projects are recorded live, God Gave the Song is a studio effort. The nine medleys each run eight to nine minutes in length and contain three or four songs each. Instrumentation is very straightforward, not at all distracting from the lyrics. Each medley features at least one soloist backed by the Homecoming Friends choir. On the song "I Will Serve Thee," former Imperial Terry Blackwood, Steven Hill, and Ladye Love Smith perform as a trio. One medley features a Kids Choir singing "Kids Under Construction" and "I Am a Promise." Former Gaither Vocal Band and Sunday Drive member Buddy Mullins sings "Then Came the Morning" and "Let Freedom Ring." David Phelps (Gaither Vocal Band) does a stunning rendition of "Dream On." Some of the other soloists include Bob Cain, Jessy Dixon, and Gene McDonald (The Florida Boys). Although not billed as such, God Gave the Song is essentially a tribute recording to the songs of Bill and Gloria Gaither. You won't likely hear these arrangements on formatted radio, but that's more of an issue of their longer length rather than quality. Gaither fans who prefer arrangements that focus on the lyrics will enjoy God Gave the Song. --David Bruce Murray |
