Bryan Duncan's Joyride roars to life and sets a peppy pace for the first five cuts. "Maybe I'm Amazed" (by Paul McCartney) starts low key, but builds for a big finish complete with mass choir. Track six provides the first real contrast: a sappy piano jazz number called "I'll Always Have Jesus." "If You Pray For Me" is also a bit laid back, but the rest of Joyride is in your face...fusing funk, black gospel, pseudo-rap, and even a touch of the blues for the closer "The Battle Is The Lord's." Ashley Cleveland takes a verse on "Clap Your Hands," and Donnie McClurkin is featured on "Where There's Love."
One minor grumble: If you like reading printed lyrics, you must visit Duncan's website. If you're reading this review, it's likely you're already wired, of course. But some consumers prefer the ready access of lyrics in the liner notes.
In summary, Bryan Duncan is an energetic and enthusiastic entertainer. What may be difficult for him to communicate in one-on-one conversation seems to be no problem at all when he's in front of the microphone at a studio. His enthusiasm comes through abundantly on Joyride. This is "driving music." Literally.
