Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has always been immediately identifiable, due to their signature style that's often copied, but never quite duplicated. Over the years, they've consistently delivered quality performances and arrangements that blend classic orchestrations with Gospel rhythm tracks. The new seasonal project, Light of the World, is no exception.
Every tune except "Christmas Carol Medley" features at least one soloist. Matthew Wooten is a child who sings the opening lines of "I'll Give Him My Heart," a tune based on the traditional poem by Christini Rosetti. "O Holy Night" (not the classic anthem) features Paige Strackman. Babbie Mason joins the choir for "Peace on Earth," a song she wrote in 1999. Susan Pettray is featured on "The Birthday of a King," a slow-moving arrangement that builds to a climax at the end. "The Worship Medley" has an extended string section at the beginning that effectively sets the stage for Nina Rivera's solo.
Light of the World never gets in a tremendous hurry, evidenced in the fact that the average length of each cut is over five minutes. There are some moments of excitement, and portions of some tunes might even be considered upbeat. But the overall effect of the CD is relaxing…just what you need at Christmastime.
