The purpose of this book is twofold: 1) to teach students step-by-step how to write a five-paragraph essay and 2) to demonstrate the creativity and fun involved in essay writing. How to Write an Essay is process oriented. Students begin by learning to gather and shape ideas and then to move into structuring their papers. This is followed by some instruction on writing itself, including paragraphing and transitions, along with introductions and conclusions. From there, students draft their pieces and then revise them.
