Editorial Reviews

For years we have needed a simple, yet biblical description of how children of believers come to Christ. Understanding this, in Pastor Smallman's own words, "frees us to do a more effective job" in leading our children in their faith. Reading this concise and thorough explanation will encourage your own faith to believe God's promises for our children, our families and Jesus' Church as we tell his story to the next generation.
How do the children of believers come to be followers of the Lord Jesus Christ themselves? What is God’s plan for leading our little ones to himself – to a vital trust in Christ as he is offered in the Gospel? Confusion reigns in this area in evangelicalism, and so (thankfully) that is the question that Stephen Smallman takes up in this helpful book. And he believes that we need to understand the Lord’s commitment to our children before we can properly put in perspective our own role in their spiritual nurture. Pointing us to our children’s need for Jesus, God’s commitments to believing families in his covenant promises, the necessity of divine regeneration of our children’s hearts and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, and the importance of their publicly professing their faith in the context of the communion of saints; and eschewing unhelpful, once-size-fits-all, experiential stereotyping, Smallman gives parents a biblical grid that is at once helpful in shaping our prayers for our children, in instructing us in what needs to be cultivated in them, and in giving us guidance for how to help them appreciate the tremendous blessings held in store via the ordinary means of grace. There is much simply-stated but profound counsel here for parents, pastors and elders alike.
Presbyterian and Reformed Publishers is to be commended for this series of booklets that are intentionally biblically reformed in content. They will enable Christians to better understand and appreciate the topics. Readability, reliability, and to the point best describe each booklet.
