## Product Description

Charlie is the smallest in his class, and is always at the back of the line. When the class decides to guess which pumpkin has the most seeds, Charlie picks the smallest. The class counts seeds by twos, fives, and tens, as each group tries to figure out who has the most seeds. Everyone is in for a surprise though, as they learn what makes the most seeds isn't what pumpkin is the biggest; as Charlie says "Small things have a lot going on inside of them." A gentle read that incorporates both math and science. 40 pages, hardcover with dust jacket. Ages 3-7.

## Publisher's Description

Here is an adorable picture book for curious kids, which explores skip counting and estimation in a fun pumpkin-themed classroom experiment.

"How many seeds are in a pumpkin?" Mr. Tiffin asks his class as they gather around the big, medium, and small pumpkins on his desk. Robert, the biggest kid, guesses that the largest one has a million seeds; Elinor, sounding like she knows what she's talking about, guesses the medium one has 500 seeds; and Anna, who likes even numbers better than odd ones, guesses that the little one has 22. Charlie, the smallest boy in the class, doesn't have a guess.

Counting pumpkin seeds is messy business, but once the slimy job is done, to everyone's surprise, the smallest pumpkin has the most seeds! As Charlie happily exclaims, "Small things have a lot going on inside of them."

This book makes a wonderful read-aloud companion to any math or science curriculum, and it's a fun way to reinforce counting skills at home.

## Editorial Reviews

Review, San Francisco Chronicle (circ: 329,989), September 30, 2007:
"There's quite a lot to learn about pumpkins in this book, which even a math-phobe can love, plus there's kids working together and having their minds opened once their assumptions are trounced. Karas' stylized illustrations capture the fun of an engaging, hands-on classroom project."

Although a bit pricey, this is a great fall book for children! First, we bought a small pumpkin and polled our family on the # of seeds. Then, we read our book. We, like the children in the book, underestimated the small pumpkin b/c of it's size. Afterwards, we cut our pumpkin open and counted the seeds after they dried. It was a fun fall activity for our children!!! We also got some instructions to make roasted pumpkin seeds off of the internet for everyone to enjoy!
