Horizons K Phonics and Reading
October 23, 2014
Before the items were purchased (bought 2) I knew I was getting a great product! we have previously used this for our now ten year old and it was instrumental in her learning to read and write. We are using the same for our other children.
First the positives: Lots here, perhaps enough for two years of instruction for the average 5-6 year old. Kindergarten program moves quickly through phonics concepts so a plus for an advanced child or one that is catching on quickly. Includes made up words for those are already sight reading but need decoding practice. Good practice for following instructions, instructions must be read by teacher/parent.
Not so positives: The lines where children write responses are too small for beginning writers. The amount of daily work is excessive for beginning writers and readers. (Usually two pages front and back) The first word of the first story is "This". Not a great way to boost confidence in beginning readers. Concepts like writing sentences with quotation marks and plural possessives are taught. The teacher's manual is needed to figure out many of the pictures. No assessments but review pages can be used to assess retention.
My 4yr old daughter was struggling with letter recognition until we started this book. She loves the colourful images, and the spiral effect has made it easy for her to remember previous lessons. My 5yr old son has been working through this series as well and loves reading! A word of warning- they are extremely advanced for a kindergarten level.
Really easy to follow, my twins (4 yrs old) already knew the alphabet so this allows me to teach them the rules about the proper use of constants and vowels. I am using this as a guide to make sure my children are prepared for kindergarden.
